Hotels in Olhão?
by Pau365
Hi,
Are there any hotels in Olhão, I mean in the centre, or in the town itself? I can only find pensões listed. Did the Hotel Ria Sol close down? If there are only pensões available, can anyone recommend which one might be the best?
Thanks!

Hello
Hello
The hotel that was mentioned, Real Marina Hotel & Spa has not yet opened. Is in the works but the opening is soon.
Near the center of the City you have the Hotel Armona http://www.residencialarmona.com/ , and various Hostels. the best hostels (Pensão) is name Bicuar , which is very well located.
I hope my answer will yet in time to help.
If you need to know more about Olhão or Algarve, I'll be at your disposal.

The thread might be of use to future travellers…
I finally stayed in Pensao Bicuar. A typical pensao but it wasn’t bad: very clean, lovely central location. The Hotel Armona looks pretty good and will have better facilities, but that N125 location really spoils it!

Ilha Deserta (deserted island)
by conhe
The ilha deserta(deserted island) is also called Ponta da Culatra (Culatra's edge) because it's located on the east edge of the Ilha da Culatra(Culatra's island). It used to be a bit more deserted than what it is now,but it's still a lot more peaceful than most beaches in the area. The last time I was there was in July of 2004 and there we're only five people there. And this is an area with a lenght of 6 to 8 kilometers if you include the ocean side, wich is even more deserted. You can only go there by private boat or by aqua-taxi.You can get an aqua-taxi on Olhao's pier. There's a sign with their phone number just by the pier.It might cost between 20-30EUR one-way and take up to 6 people,so it's not so expensive if a few people share the ride.Tell the guy in the boat that you want to go to Ilha Deserta on the east side, facing the Armona Island. This will prevent him to take you to another Ilha Deserta located near Faro(also a cool place). It might sound confusing, but it's not if you look at the map and if you learn a few words in portuguese.Don't forget to set an hour for your return with the guy of the aqua-taxi,or you'll be stranded on a deserted island.Take some water and food because there's nothing there apart from the sea and sand. And most important, bring back all the litter you make, please!
Olhao; one of the last functioning fishermen towns
by WanderingFinn
"Fishermen and their delicious fish"
Olhao is said to be one of the last real remaining fisherman village, where fishing is the main means of earning your living. There are lots of fishing boats and the harbour is big.
Naturally, in Olhao you can find restarants offering the famous charcoal grilled sardines almost in every place. The fish is perhaps the freshest I have eaten in Portugal. The prices in typical local small restaurants are very reasonable.
"The open (fish) market place/market hall"
We were unlucky to arrive a little bit too late - the fish market had closed its doors already. It is in the red big complex of buildings behind me. It is said to be famous for its fresh seafood and fish products of many kind.
"Olhao downtown"
Olhao is not just about fish - there is a nice riverside and a nice downtown too. A nice place to find a place for ice cream, coffee or beer. Also, unbeliavably nice houses and architecture. Please see the really nice buildings and architecture of Olhao in my "What to do" of Olhao pages.
Olhao - the fishing heaven
by alweis
Olhao is one of the most picturesque places in Algarve
The moment you get out of the car smell of the fish hits you.
Fishing pier is busy with boats and fisherman are working, getting ready for next trip.
Local fish market is an exibition of all kind of strange creatures form shellfish to sharks.
Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário
by Willettsworld
At the centre of the town at the end of Avenida da República, in the Praça da Restauração, is the church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, built in 1698 with contributions from the fishermen when it was the first stone building in Olhão. Consecrated in 1715, it's a very graceful building with a baroque façade including a pediment decorated with scrolls and, in the centre, a shield flanked by angels. Inside, the main chapel is defined by a carved and gilded retable and triumphal arch (18th century). Its roof is decorated with a fresco and it contains a statue of Nossa Senhora do Rosario (Our Lady of the Rosary) (17th century). There are side chapels, also with carved retables. Among the statues to be seen, the most interesting are a Crucifixion and a Santo Apóstolo (Holy Apostle) (18th century). Be sure to visit the rear of the church (outside) as it features an open chapel called Capela de Nosso Senhor dos Aflitos - (Our Lady of the Afflicted), who is especially revered by those connected with the sea.
