Quiet and off the main road

When we made our reservations online, we got a good deal for offseason. A room and breakfast for only 28 Euro (double occupancy). When we arrived at the hotel, which you can see in the photos, we thought we had been "taken for a ride", in other words cheated. It looked like the hotel was closed, no lights, no cars, no people.......
But when we enventually found the entrance, which was around the side, we found a very nice gentleman to help us in their small but neat lobby. We were taken to our room and found it to be clean but simple with few "extras".

Unique Quality: The breakfast was contentinal, but with enough to fill you up.
The pool as you can see in the photo is quite nice and was a pleasant surprise, hidden away in the back.

Bicycling in the Algarve

by Giverson

We will be in the Lagos, Sagres area for 2-3 days in early October.
Are there areas there that are ideal for bicycling. We had thought about trying to arrange for a ride from Aljezur to Sagres.

For touring this area, would it be better to stay in Sagres, Salema or Lagos.

Thanks for any input.

Dont go to that area a long time a go.

But that area is very nice and it is to do that trail easly next to the coast for trails and secondary roads.

If interested in guided tours or special information, i can search for any animation companies.

Travel Tips for Sagres

History

by solopes

Sagres occupies a special place in Portuguese history - it was the nest of the discoveries. A few signs still remain, but it is more important the symbolic references than the site itself. "The end of the western world" in the antiquity, became the starting point for the new one.

The (today) empty space shouldn't be that empty, and it is easy to imagine prince Henrique controlling from the cliffs the movements of ships coming and going.

Fishing off the Rocks

by miketrudeau

I don't know if this would be categorized as a Local Custom so much as a Common Employment. Many men there fish off the rocky shores, sometimes right against the cliff faces. They seem to have steady feet, but the rocks are sharp and the waves can become huge swells surprisingly fast. The water could dash you apart on the rocks in a second. All the same, so many people here do it that it can't be THAT dangerous...right?
One thing I wonder about: What fish swim that close to the shore if the waves are so dangerous? Can you tell that I'm a huge landlubber?

sagres scubado diving

by vixsandbrye

we visited sagres in may which is slightly before the area gets busy so when we turned up at the dive shop we found a blackboard notice that 2 or more people could phone up and arrange a dive anytime which is what we did and had a dive organised for the next day.

We hired the full kit including masks and fins, were taken out by boat to the location and the dive master took us down, showed us where to find the best sights, gave directions and then left us too it. As fairly new divers this was perfect. The dive was 21 meters good visabilty and the dive master gave us confidance to go and dive on our own while enjoying the dive.

the diving dog was entertainment while waiting for the boat to be loaded with gear, the dogs owner wishes to have a scubaset made up for the dog as he insists on following the boat out. but if your in dry clothes give the dog room he has an instict for dry people when shaking of! the shop has it all or bring your own

Fortaleza da Baleeira

by Willettsworld

Located on a headland that overlooks the fishing harbour in Sagres town, this ruined fort dates back to at least the 16th century as it existed in 1573 when Dom Duarte, Governor of the Algarve, visited. Its name means Fortress Whale in English and there's very little to see of it so don't waste your time if your time is limited.

Directions: Drive right through town towards the harbour. When you get to a roundabout, where one road heads downhill to the harbour, walk up the left track and it's about 300 metres further on.

How to handle end of the world- Eat bratwurst!

by einokj

I don't know if this is tourist trap of the worst kind or something really off-the-beaten-bath. The last bratwurst before America? Anyone knowing where is the first bratwurst in America? Please, tell me :-) This one is located in Sao Vicente.
