Fishing Industry
by Carmela71
Due to the tuna fishing and factory, Tavira main industry was the fishing but in this days it has changed to the tourism. You can still see the fisherman at their boats on the side of the river cleaning the boats or preparing the clamps for the restaurants
Salt
by solopes
Browsing the outskirts of town I found a group of men producing salt by the traditional means. It was nice to see (southeast of the city, closer to the sea), but with such a hard work I don't know if they can match the market's price for long.
Ihla de Tavira (Island of Tavira)
by Carmela71
To get there you have to get the little boat (for just one euro per person the return ticket) at about 2 km from Tavira. In winter the last one was at 5.00pm so we missed to see the sunset from there.
As we went in winter the beach was empty, but it was warm and sunny so it was paradise! Just km and km of sandy beach for you!

A restaurant with excellent food and atmosphere! Vegetarians heaven and also if you like meat, this is the place to have dinner!
De eigenaresse van dit restaurant is Nederlands en snapt wat goed eten is. Wij zijn tijdens onze vakantie vaak teleugesteld bijj restaurants, maar zeker niet hier.
Goed eten, goede sfeer. Zeker een aanrader voor vegetariers, maar ook de vleeseters kunnen hier terrecht!
Tavira Castle
by Balam
It is not known when the first castle at this site was built. Some sources say a fortress here was already being rebuilt by the Phoenicians in the 8th century BC. The present castle however probably dates back to the 11th century.
There was a castle here when the town was taken from the Moors in 1242 by King Paio Peres Correia during the Reconquest. In 1244 the castle was granted, by King Sancho II, to the Order of the Knights of Santiago who renounced this donation 30 years later. In 1293 King Dinis ordered the remodelling and recontruction of Tavira Castle because he recognized the importance of Tavira as a base of defense against piracy. In the 1755 earthquake the castle and town suffered heavily.
Tavira Castle was a small, roughly rectangular, castle. It now consists of remains of two square towers, one octagonal tower and walls on three sides. None of the towers possess the characteristics of a keep although there surely must have been one. Its interior is now used a small garden. You can climb the walls and the towers. The castle can be visited, for free, during the daytime.
