If you can find the Por Do Sol in Tavira without incident you are likely to enjoy the place very much. However navigating nearly a dozen one way streets can provide a little strain to first time guests of this very nice b and b.
The b & b is actually located on the edge of the downtown facing an area of undeveloped land. It is one of the more run down areas of the old city but this does not create a problem. The establishment is basically a four story older building with rooms on the second and third floor, a lobby on the first floor, and a rooftop terrace on the fourth.
The owners Miguel and Nicolette are generally friendly. Miguel was particularly helpful in pointing out things to see in Tavira as well as the countryside. He also had advice about the Algarve Toll Road and I pray that his advice of the cameras not being able to read Spanish license plates is correct :).
The rooms themselves are very plain but clean. The beds were comfortable and the bathroom more than adequate. Unfortunately our room did not contain a blackout curtain at night. The walls of this b and b are exceptionally thin and you can hear nearly everyone in the hotel as well as every word of the neighbors.
When you check in you are asked to pay in full up front. You are also requested to identify the time and items you want for breakfast. If it is rainy breakfast is served to your room. Nice touch. The food for breakfast is excellent including an assortment of meats and cheeses, large rolls, orange juice, a delicious fruit cup of fresh fruits, tea and coffee.
For 42 euros for two people a night this place was an absolute steal of a deal!

I will be staying in Canabas de Tavira from Sept 2009 - April 2010 and wonder if there is anyway I can get an Internet connection. There is none at the condominium where I will be staying.
Is Mobile Internet an option in the Algarve?
Thank you.

Mobile Internet is an option - we have Vodafone Portugal for example. Suggest you check with your local provider if they have a roaming agreement with a Portuguese company and when you have recovered from the shock of the tariffs you might consider that an option.
Alternatively you could buy a pay as you go dongle on arrival, but whether there is a shop in Cabanas selling them I am afraid I know not. There's bound to be one in Tavira. Given the length of your stay that might be worth considering.
The Vodafone options for mobile broadband are here; you will need Portuguese to read them.
There tariffs have changed but the principle is the same.
One thing you should make sure off before you buy is that you can received a good 3G signal in the apartment. This needs someone a 3G phone or a pc equipped with mobile interet. I would not think that in Cabanas there would be a problem as it is flat but buildings with thick walls can reduce signal reception.
Also be aware that pay as you go mobile internet can be expensive if you intend to use it a lot, e.g. for Skype.
There is theoretically 98% Internet coverage of the Portuguese National Territory by mobile internet. (Much higher that the UK or France.)

Travel Tips for Tavira
Ilha de Tavira
by Lyneke
If you want to visit the Ilha (beautifull beach there!) and you are on footh, than follow the right side of the river for about 1 mile away from the citycenter (you will pass some salt banks which is beautifull to see). You will arrive at a dock where you can take a boat or taxiboat. The boat costs 1.5 euro 2-ways and the taxi costs 6 euro's one way (if you're with 6 persons, it comes down to 1 euro per person). The boat leaves once an hour, the taxiboat has no hours ;-)
Don't forget that that the last boat coming back to the mainland leaves at 6 sharp! The only way to get back than is by taxiboat, and they last one is at 7. Otherwise, have a pleasant stay on the beach ;-) The ride back on a speedboat (YESS, i missed the last boat back 2 the mainland, hihi)
Street tiles

Tiles must be something very typical from the Mediterranean areas, but looking at this ones, I could feel I was in Andalucia (ok instead of Calle you can see Rua, but in Galicia is similar lol)
Guided Birdwatching Tours
by anotherlevel
The Algarve has a wonderful variety of birds and many places where to find them. At almost any time of the year there is something of interest to see. Tours may cover several different habitats dependent on season and tides - salinas, saltmarsh, hills, steppe grasslands and woodlands. These tours are specifically designed for those who like to learn and have fun while bird watching.
Directions to the beach
by Ben-UK
Tavira is about 2km from the sea. The beach, situated in the Ilha de Tavira, stretches approx 11km west. During the summer, a boat will take you from the river in the centre of town. Out of season, you need to walk the 2km to Quatro Aguas where a boat will take you across to Ilha de Tavira and the beach. There are holiday homes and a camping facility here, but no cars are allowed.

There is absolutely no better way to experience mother nature than to spend your days hiking.
Exploring new landscapes, observing new wildlife, and experiencing new ecosystems it's an exciting way to spend a day.
