The white-washed buildings and colourful plants and trees make walking a pleasure around Tavira - and if you like looking around churches, there are 37 of them here ....

Is there a hotel pool in Tavira town centre open to non residents?
There are no hotels in Tavira town centre itself. They are all on the edge of town, maybe 3/4 mile away.
Besides Hotels you can go to the Piscinas Municipais de Tavira (public pools at Avenida Zeca Afonso) opening timetable:
Monday to Friday - 8:00 to 13:00 / 15:00 to 21:00
Saturdays, 9:00 to 13:00 / 15:00 to 19:00
Sundays - 9:00 to 13:00
Holidays - Closed
Pousada do Convento da Graça (Rua Dom Paio Peres Correia) has 2 outside pools and normally you can go to Pousadas pools even not being a resident there.
Hotel Porta Nova (Rua António Pinheiro) has outside and inside pools and also a health club so probably you can go to their pools.
Hotel Vila Galé Tavira (Rua 4 de Outubro) also has pools.
Hope this help.

Tavira was known as the land of the thousand churches and even if most of them are closed the city looks like an open museum.
When we refer here to churches, we also include the chapels, convents, hermitages, etc . many of them are under reconstruction and rehabilitation. Some became private houses or hotels. Next to the tower tank you can see the convent being reconverted in a Poussada
Most people don't know it before coming to Tavira but this region is specially devoted to the octopus fishery. Santa Luzia, a small fishermen's village, is the capital of octopus. It has the largest octopus market of Portugal.
A few years ago, when almost every man of Santa Luzia lived from the fishery, it was common to see many boats in the estuary. Nowadays, only a few people live from this work and most of the fishery is done by bigger boats. However, it's still possible to see many things from the big tumes of octopus fishery in Santa Luzia.
Besides that, there are plenty of restaurants where you can eat octopus in many manners. It's very delicious.
The National Park of Ria Formosa is composed by various islands and protects specially bird species. We were lucky to see some flamingos on our way, specially at the salinas of Tavira (where we enjoyed another great sunset)
It was so nice to be back to normal prices (prices before euro when a coffe was 100 ptas = 0,60 cent of Euro) that we went back a few times.
They did not overcharge us for being tourist, and they were very nice and helpful all the time
