Travel Tips for Braga

A young city

by micas_pt

It is said in Portugal that Braga is the youngest city of the country. This doesn’t refer to the city itself but to its population: it is a fact that the average age of Braga’s inhabitants is one of the lowest compared to other cities.

Braga is also known due to its University and the students’ community. As you stroll through the city you will surely notice that the youth is a dominant group. Also, students’ traditions are quite noticeable during the appropriate months of the year – mainly the beginning of the school year and the period before final exams.

Bom Jesus Staircase

by solopes

Included in the most visited complex of Braga - the shrine of Bom Jesus do Monte - the staircase is a wonderful piece of art, full of symbolism and precious details.

Descending in a zigzag, each landing is decorated with chapels and fountains, all of them with a different theme.

According to the place where you have parked, you may plan your descent by foot, using the old water-moving funicular (the oldest in Iberia, but still safe and working) in your way up.

Cathedral

by micas_pt

This Cathedral is one the main spots to visit while you are in the center of Braga. It is very beautiful, both outside and inside.

This Cathedral reflects several architectural styles, such as Romanesque and Gothic, but Barroque stands out. Its construction begun in the 12th century on the place where stood a former church destroyed in 6th century. This Cathedral went through some improvements along the centuries and some chapels were later added.

Nowadays, it houses several chapels, a museum and some thombs:
> D. Afonso, son of King D. João I, who died still a child;
> D. Henrique de Borgonha and wife, D. Teresa, builder of this Cathedral;
> Archbishop D. Lourenço Vicente.

Opening hours (free entrance):
> October to March: 7.45 am - 6.30 pm
> April to September: 7.45 am - 7.00 pm

Serene Braga

by Mayonie

A very quiet and charming university town. Bom Jesus, the 2nd important catholic pilgrimage site in Portugal, lies just outside the city. Another noteworthy fact is that the oldest church in Portugal is located in this northern city- the Catedral Se, built around 1070 A.D. This town also boasts of over a dozen churches ... a church at every road bend!
