Travel Tips for Guimarães

Guimaraes 2012 - European Capital of Culture

by HORSCHECK

I came to Guimaraes in May 2009 just one week after it had been chosen as European capital of culture in 2012.

Besides Guimaraes the European Commission designated the city of Maribor in Slovenia as European capital of culture in 2012.

Tourism Office

by micas_pt

To get information about the city and the major monuments visit the Tourism Office. There are two offices in the city: one of them situated in the historic centre and the second by the castle (I visited the later). I’d say that this later is a good option, as the castle and the Palace are a good starting point to discover the city. Parking here is somewhat easy (and free) and after visiting the castle and palace you may easily walk down the Street D. Maria to the squares. Just follow the map.

Free map and guide of Guimaraes

by HORSCHECK

As Guimaraes will be the European Capital of Culture in 2012, the local Tourist Office is well equipped with all sorts of helpful free maps and brochures.

I got myself a city guide with a map of the historic city centre as well as descriptions of the main sights in English. Additionally I picked up another free map which also covered the area outside the city centre.

Guimaraes has two Tourist Offices: One is located at the square Praca de S. Tiago right in the heart of the historic city centre, while the other one can be found just outside the southern end of the city centre at the Largo Valentim Moreira de Sa.

Trip to Porto

by HORSCHECK

If you stay a few days in Guimaraes, then a trip to Porto is highly recommended. We actually stayed 4 days in Porto and liked the city a lot. Porto is located only 75 minutes by train south of Guimaraes. Please check my transportation tips for more details.

Porto is Portugal's second largest city and it is divided by the river Douro.

The touristy centre is the Ribeira, a historic district on the right bank of the river.

Among the main sights are the bridge Ponte Luis I, the Cathedral Se, the Clerigos Church, the Santo Ildefonso Church and the S Lourenco Church.

Museo de Alberto Sampaio

by nhcram

Museo de Alberto Sampaio is a museum that is housed in the beautiful Romanesque cloister and adjoining rooms of of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira. Entrance is free which is a bonus) and there are many interesting exhibits of religious art and azulejos (Portugese ceramics.)
