Architecture
by micas_pt
Houses in Guimarães are most pleasant. The ones situated on the historic centre still maintain the medieval look – small houses with nice wooden windows and balconies. Some of them are, fortunately, very well-kept.
There are some other buildings to mention, as is the case of the houses that surround square of Toural, which are very beautiful on my opinion. And while strolling around other streets of the city, also on city historic centre but off the main routes, I came across many nice houses both buildings and manor houses, some of them more elaborate and some more simple, but all very pleasant. Some of them are very colourful, providing a “lively” look to the city.
Portuguese beer
by HORSCHECK
The north of Portugal is especially famous for its portwine from the Douro Valley. Nevertheless, there are also some well known beers available in Portugal.
Sagres beer is brewed by the Central de Cervejas brewery in Vila Franca de Xira. Since 2008 the brewery is under control of a joint venture of the breweries Heinken and Carlsberg.
Superbock beer is the most popular beer in Portugal and also well known in other countries of the world. It is brewed by the Unicer brewery in Leca do Balio in the north of Portugal.

Penha Mountain
by HORSCHECK
The Penha mountain is situated southeast of Guimaraes. It can be reached by cable car from just outside Guimaraes city centre. Please read my transportation tip for more details.
From the top of the mountain at 617 m you can enjoy panoramic views of Guimaraes and the surrounding region.
Several sights can be found here as well. The Penha Sanctuary which was built in the early 1930's dominates the area. Nowadays it is a popular pilgrimage site.
Another religious building is the Chapel of Saint Christopher whose construction dates back to 1880.
Numerous grottos are located all around the mountain. One of the nicest is the Grotto of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel which can be found in a rock formation just underneath the Chapel of Saint Christopher.
Near the entrance to the Grotto of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel the small Grotto of St. Elias the patron saint of sleep can be seen.
Other interesting sights include the Pope Pius IX Statue and the Grotto of Our Lady Lourdes.

Igreja de S. Miguel
by micas_pt
This small chapel is situated half way between the palace and the castle. It is said that D. Afonso Henriques was baptized here, although it isn’t a proved fact. Along the years this chapel was the target of robbery and was later on abandoned.
In recent years it was recovered and opened to public. When inside there is nothing else to see but the walls and the floor – there is a restricted area that you cannot walk across where there are visible some sculpted stones. They believe these are the tombs of warriors that were buried inside this chapel, as was a custom a long time ago. Some also say that before leaving to fight battles the warriors came to this church to pray and to be blessed.
