Travel Tips for Guimarães

by AndyRG

This mediaeval castle is the main attraction, it has seven towers. It was built by Henry of Burgundy (his son is Afonso Henriques, the first king of the country). Be careful when you walk on it, there is danger to fall down!

What to see...

by AndyRG

There is a mixture of mediaeval relics of the past and more... present parts of buildings. Alberto Sampaio Museum, the Sacred Art Museum and the finest church in Guimaryes, Sao Francisco, worth a visit.

Olive tree legend

by micas_pt

The olive tree legend says that a olive tree was planted on the square so that it would provide olive oil to the altar of the church of N. Sra. da Oliveira (situated in front of the olive tree). Back then olive oil was used as candles are used nowadays – to maintain a burning flame by the altar. But the olive tree started to die. Merchant Pedro Soares offered a cross to Padrão dos Salados and ever since the cross was placed there the olive tree didn’t die and grew.

Nowadays there is still an olive tree by the church and the Padrão dos Salados, but it isn’t the one on the legend, as the actual tree was planted in 1985.

Cabeceiras de Basto

by Witinha

Terras de Basto (Basto's Lands) are located between montains and forests (east of Guimarães). In that area we may find statues knowned as "bastos", which are representative of Celt warriors and were used to mark territories.
At Cabeceiras de Basto is located the Refojos Monastery, baroque style.

Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira

Since the 10th century the Cloister and Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira were rebuilt several times in different architectural styles from Byzanthine, Romanesque to Gothic and finally Neo-classical style.

The tower, which overlooks the square Largo da Oliveira was only added in the middle of the 15th century.

The Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira is located at the square Largo da Oliveira, right in the middle of the historic city centre.
