More about Guest House Douro

A perfect gem in Porto

by TripAdvisor Member LiverpoolLeeson

We have just returned from a 3 day break to the beautiful city of Porto. The Guest House Duoro is a magical place to stay, Carmen and Joao, our hosts, made us very welcome and attended to our every need. The breakfast is one of the best ever, simply sumptuous and beautifully presented. No need for a car as public transport is close by and Porto is an easy city to walk around if you are fit!! Pay heed to Carmen and Joao restaurant recommendations as they were excellent..

Fab Guest House Douro in Porto

by TripAdvisor Member CarolineLanc

Just got back from spending the May Bank Holiday weekend in Porto at Guest House Douro. We had Room 302 overlooking the river and it was great. Lovely comfy bed. Sparkling shower room with some nice toiletries supplied by the owners Carmen and Joao. The view over the river is spectacular -- in fact I could hardly tear my husband away from it! The guest house has only recently opened and Carmen and Joao are very attentive hosts. The breakfasts were wonderful and huge, starting with ham and cheese with bread rolls, moving through yogurt to a huge platter of fresh fruit. We'd never tasted mango like it! All washed down with fresh orange juice and as much coffee or tea as you can drink. We also profited from the owners' local knowledge to visit their suggestions for dinner in the evenings and were not at all disappointed. All in all, an experience to treasure and one to repeat in the future.

It is a Gem!

by TripAdvisor Member indutindu

To stay in a place which is not impersonal; where the proprietors are absolutely charming and welcoming; which has an incredible location with respect to the sights to be seen in Porto; where the included breakfast is tasty and presented with the standards of a 5-star hotel, but served with the warmth within a family kitchen; Guest House Douro is truly a gem. Congratulations to Carmen and Joao! You truly have the gift for making your guest house one of the finest places I have stayed. The attention to detail, including the welcome port wine, your warmth and most importantly your sense of humour will make weary travellers feel alive again to explore the beautiful city in which you have chosen to hang your hat. Marvellous stay

by TripAdvisor Member JohnSSTheNetherlands

Great hotel, beautifull rooms but not overwhelming spacious. Great surroundings and very close to the main points of interrest. Buy a tourist ticket for the public transport. You can jump in any bus or tram/metro. Gives you some rest while still experiencing the town. You can allways jump out and travel the other direction if you made a mistake. And then Carmen and Jao, challenge them and you'll have a great time. The breakfast; !!!!!!!!!

Don't consider staying anywhere else in Porto

by TripAdvisor Member SkyeBluNyc

Guest House Douro is truly a gem. The rooms, are beautiful, classy, modern, clean and sparkling new, with incredible attention to detail. Fantastic shower and very comfy (new) beds too, with crisp white linens. The location is perfect, right on the river, and hosts Carmen and Joao were absolutely wonderful - booking us dinner, bringing us surprise champagne and strawberries (we are on honeymoon), booking (and canceling) activities for us, and generally being exceptionally eager to make our stay perfect. Really, do not consider staying anywhere else in Porto - this is one of the best boutique hotels we've ever stayed at.

Simply Perfect!

by TripAdvisor Member SyttendeMai

Our stay was simply perfect! The view from our room was stunning. If you want it all (location, a view, cleanliness, and comfort), along with proprietors who are both caring and charming, then this is the place to stay in Porto.

exquisite charm and wonderful service

by TripAdvisor Member freeblue

We spent 2 days in Porto under grey skies and sometimes lashing rain! GHD is an oasis of warmth and harmony. We felt extremely spoiled to be so close to the river and to enjoy its eternal beauty, rain or shine. Carmen and Juan somehow read your mood and anticipate your desires. Go and experience it for yourselves!

Top marks for position, comfort and views.

by TripAdvisor Member MaryC33

Everything we read about GHD on this site was true. We have never been so well loooked after before. The position within the old town is excellent, the views from the front of the house are wonderful and the attention given to our comfort was 100%. The rooms are rather small but there has been no expense spared in the quality of the furnishings and rarely have we slept in such comfortable beds. We were there for three nights and suggestions and bookings for restaurants were always offered. We had some splendid meals within yards of the house. I doubt that anyone could be disappointed by their stay here

Truly exceptional

by TripAdvisor Member shiftcontroller

The welcome we received was so lovely after a bad experience in Lisbon and made us feel so comforted. Being a mature English retired couple it was such a delight to have a pot of tea, glass of port and lovely biscuits while we waited for the room. Room 402 had exceptional views and as someone else stated the rooms are not huge but then the building is only so wide. The bed was so comfortable and gave us one of the best nights sleep we both had on our month away. We only wish we had taken the camera down to take a picture of the breakfast - what lovely presentation, almost a shame to eat. The recommendation for evening meal was just right and it is one of our best boutique hotels we have stayed in on our many travels. Thanks again to Carmen and Juan

Amazing

by TripAdvisor Member RicardoPortugal

The Guest House Douro is a wonderful place to stay.
We only spent 2 days there but I cant wait to came back has soon has possible.
Everything that you read here in trip advisor is absolutely true.
Located in the prettiest zone of the city is undoubtedly one of the best alternatives that Oporto has to offer in what it concerns the relation quality / price. With an amazing view over the river and beautiful and charming rooms, Guest House Douro is one of the best hotels I ever been to.
Carmen and João, the owners, are always concerned about your welfare and to make sure that your staying will be just perfect.

To them, I leave my best regards and hope to see you guys soon.

Ricardo and Joana
