Assuming you do not rent a car, you can take the Porto Metro from the airport to Porto Campanha railway station. That will take about 35 minutes and cost 2 Euro. Trains leave every 20 minutes. You can of course take a taxi, at much greater cost but a little faster.!

There is a fast train to Coimbra at 1957 but it is quite likely you may not make it. That is the last fast train on Saturday.

After that, there is a slow regional train at 20.14 (change of train needed in Aveiro) and that is the last train of any type Porto to Coimbra on Saturday night.

The first train on Sunday is at 0647.

The last bus from Porto (Batalha Bus Station) to Coimbra on Saturdays is at 2015 and then no more buses until 0045. Bus journey takes about 90 minutes.

Batalha bus station is in the city centre and as with the train you will have great difficulty in reaching it from the airport in sufficient time.

There is another at the University (Praça da Porta Ferrea)

Coimbra has the oldest...

by Kurt_S.

Coimbra has the oldest university of Portugal and the whole city offers a lot of sights. Beside the interesting churches and beautiful parks, there is a wonderful breathtaking library in the university on top of the hill. The 50.000 students are the main reason why the life in the city is so relaxed. It offers an open atmosphere, although the student traditions are visible almost everywhere. Especially when you see the students walking around in their 'uniforms'. Even today they wear clothes as they were worn hundreds of years ago and from which you can learn a lot about the person wearing them. Provided you know the secrets behind them. Go there and find it out! Talk to people and enjoy the politeness and kindness of the Portuguese people.

odd-shaped buildings

by arasnosliw

I appreciate the fact that this city has maken the most of its space. I love strange-shaped buildings. You know, triangle, obliques, etc. Coimbra is full of many buildings built to fit corners. Skinny, tall, square, small, Sara loves them all!

Queima das Fitas

by acemj

The first Thursday in May marks the beginning of the Burning of the Ribbons festival, which is a student led celebration of the end of the academic year. There are concerts and parades and more importantly, beer drinking to rival Munich's Oktoberfest.

Pátio da Inquisição

by Redang

Pátio da Inquisição or Patio/Yard of the Inquisition is the group of buildings of historical and architectural interest, where the Holy Office of the Inquisition functioned from 1.566 until it finished in 1.821.

How to get there? From Praça 8 de Maio, leave tha Cámara Municipal (City Hall) on your rigth, cross Rúa Olimpo Nicolau Rui Fernandes and turn right along this street, then, turn left taking Rúa Pedro Rocha, and there it is.
