Re: Coimbra University

If you include their Science museum in places to visit, you would need half a day, but if it's just the library, chapel, the jail, it will take you in total less than an hour. Note, however, that library visits are timed, and the door is opened only every 20 minutes, allowing only a limited number of visitors every time. So you may have to wait a bit, depending on the number of people waiting to get in -- i didn't see any queue the last time, people were just waiting patiently for their turn. The visit to the library takes from 10-15 minutes only, in any case but it IS impressive, and worth the longer wait.

Thank you Berenices.

We are not interested in visiting the museum, just the other parts you mention.

We will spend the whole day at Coimbra so following your suggestions, we will definetely visit the University.

Appart from this, the rest of the day we will see both Catedrals, Quinta das Lagrimas, Commerce Place and the hotel offers us the posibility to make a trip on Douro but we do not know because we will be at Coimbra this Saturday and weather forecast seems to be very bad, a lot of rains. What a pity!

Travel Tips for Coimbra

"Quebra-costas"

by solopes

The funniest thing about this steep coblestone narrow street is its name - backbones bracker. It's easy to understand why. Hidden below heavy construction, it has a long history, serving as the main passage from the high to the low city, in the students' acess to the university.

Largo da Portagem

by rexvaughan

The Largo da Portagem seems to be the hub of the old city and from it you have easy access to the main pedestrian way, the little mini-buses that circle the old city, taxis one of the Tourist Information offices. The TI is just on the corner to the right as you face the Largo with your back to the river. They are very helpful and have excellent maps of Coimbra. Standing tall over the square is a statue of a 19th century prime minister who shut down the cities convents and monasteries and was given the title of "friar killer."

the narrow streets of Coimbra provide for a great place to take interesting photographs using shadows/light reflections/whatnot.

Wander around with your camera and get lost in the labyrinth of streets.

QUEIMA DAS FITAS

Conimbriga

Ten kilometers south of Coimbra, the best roman ruins in Portugal deserve your visit. The city seems to exist from the 9th century BC, with the Romans arriving 800 years later. Only less than one third has been already excavated, but some buildings show good mosaics.
