Portugal through a door hole
by agarcia
It is because of its imperfections why I love this country so much. Because not everything is new and shining; because its apparent ugliness does nothing but enhance its evident beauty. Coimbra is a remarkable example of this symbiosis between the old and the new. Just take a little time to look around you; Portugal is a country that rarely disappoints to those who know how to look at it.

All over the country you'll find wonderfull tiles, some of them very old. Coimbra is no exception, sou you'll find them all over the city. The tiles i show in my pictures belong to the XVIII century and are quite well preserved.
"Queima das Fitas" (burning of the ribbons)
by arasnosliw
The first Thursday of May marks the beginning of the University of Coimbra's "Queima das Fitas" (burning of the ribbons) celebration, and it lasts until the following Thursday. There's a variety of concerts, a ball, and a parade. Whoever wins the concerts sponsored by each faculty is awarded with a briefcase full of ribbons.
The students wear the traditional black suit, white shirt, and cape.
It is tradition to cut slits at the bottom of the finalists' capes and they must sew it up with the proper faculty color thread.
A similar ceremony exists for students graduating. These students burn narrow ribbons in chamber pots of the color corresponding to their faculty, and they exchange them for wider ones.
Packing List

Hiking If you are visiting Coimbra in May you may need to bring a new liver or an economy size box of paracetemol...
The reason being that May is party time for the students of Coimbra, rather bizzarely for us it is just before exam time but basically the penultimate students organise huge parties.
There is a procession into town and all the various faculties decorate a van in the colours of their department. They then fill the van with as much alcohol as it can take and walk through the streets handing it out to by-standers...
