Charming walled city
by micas_pt
Évora is one of my favourite cities in Portugal. It is not that far from Lisbon and access is good (highway) so we often use it as a weekend getaway or simply to do a pleasant daytrip with friends, to enjoy fantastic restaurants – food there is great, and so is wine. Évora’s beautiful old city is built inside a castle’s walls and all through the city are still visible remains of consecutive occupancies and conquests, such as Roman and Moorish. The surrounding plains have its own charm and beauty – very green during Spring and dry and hot on Summer months.

Évora is the capital of the District of Évora, one of the Districts that compose the region of Alentejo. The city is situated on the interior of mainland, about 135km from Lisbon. Évora is somewhat near the Spanish border – about 100km distant.
Back part of Cathedral from Terrace 2

Dom Durando Pais ordered the Cathedral construction and consecrated the main-chapel in 1283.
The protocol celebrated between the IPPAR and the Évora archdiocese allowed the formulation of a recovery and improvement Project. At a first stage, it comprises an architectural updated study, research studies in Art History, monumental archaeology and stone pathologies; and, on a second stage, the global change and recovery of the ceilings, the cleaning of the façades, the restoration of different integrated heritage, mainly of the main-chapel and cloister, as well as several other initiatives aiming at a better public reception will be done.

street-names made of tiles & more
by globetrott
It was a surprise for me to see these wonderful tiles, that are used in order to indicate the streets-names. You will find them mostly in the old part of Evora, within the medieval townwalls.
Something else that I enjoyed a lot in Evora was the great arcades on Praca de Giraldo, for easy shoping and walking protected against sun and rain (see them in my last 2 pics)
