Recently (2007) purchased by an American and his Brazilian wife, the hotel has been remodeled. The rooms are bright and comfortable, all with air conditioning, cable TV, and wireless internet. The staff is multilingual and very helpful. With underground parking, and a location very near the center of Evora, my wife and I had an very nice stay, and highly recommend the hotel.
We loved this hotel! Great location, character, nice decor and outstanding service. Peter and Nina (the owners) were so welcoming and friendly - we felt like we were staying with friends. And the location is great. Everything in Evora is a short walk away.
When we arrived, my 5 year old had a stomach bug and was throwing up. They allowed us to check in hours early, rearranged sleeping arrangements for us, and Nina even took my son's beloved blanket home to wash it. They truly exceeded all expectations. Nina showed our 5 year old son all the special features of the building and played cards with him, after he was feeling better. Our room was lovely, but we also really appreciated the very nice and welcoming public areas. It was very comfortable to relax in the lounge - pleasant surroundings, and not at all sterile or stuffy. Breakfast was yummy, and they accomodated our request for our missed lattes.
Free internet access, both on a public machine and through wi-fi, was very convenient (and not as common in Portugal as here, so very useful.) They offered great restaurant and activity locations. Very highly recommended!
From the minute we pulled up, everyone was so welcoming. Peter and Nina provide touches that I completely appreciated; from current magazines laid out on a table, games to play, giving great suggestions for activites, great directions and tips on local customs, to a beautiful breakfast spread. They really go the extra mile. The rooms are very really pretty and my only complaint was that I could not stay longer.
We only stayed for one night but the service was outstanding.
Very friendly staff and underground parking together with the close proximity to the town was a pleasure.
The owner Nina was extremely helpful and even berated us for not telling her beforehand that we were both wheat intolerant as she would have provided wheat free products for breakfast. As it was there was a wonderful array of fresh fruit and dates plus all sorts of ecologically friendly products. This sort of hotel makes travelling a real joy.
The Albergaria do Calvario was one of the most pleasant hotels I have stayed in. The staff are very friendly and helpful, always willing to answer questions and give great advice regarding local sites to visit. The rooms are a good size and are kept very clean. Breakfast is included in the room price and is amazing. Local breads are brought in and much of the food is organically grown.
The owners are often present and enjoy talking to the guests. Albergaria do Calvario offers a personal touch that you can't find with the larger, more formal hotels.
I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone. It will make the visit to Evora a more enriched experience.
Booked, checked in and felt in love with that place.
We planed to stay just for one night, but than we met the owners Nina and Peter, received some good sightseeing tips and decided to stay one night longer. We traveled through Portugal for two weeks and stayed in a couple of hotels and there was no hotel we felt more comfortable in than Albergaria do Calvario.
The atmosphere is absolutly great, a warm welcome, great location in the city, very nice rooms and interior, lovely breakfast, outstanding service and so on... You can see and feel than Nina and Peter are taking care about each of the guests and trying to create a nice, warm and cozy atmosphere around. Be ready to have some nice chats, helpful pieces of advice and a very relaxing stay.

During our visit to the charming city of Evora, we stayed in this lovely hotel for one night. We received a very friendly welcome, we stayed in a very clean, very well decorated room which made us feel like we were at home and the attitude of the staff was very positive during the whole stay. The breakfast was perfect with organic food. And I have to add that the pillows were very comfortable (this is an important detail for us).
The people who own it(Peter & Nina), also run it, and they do a fabulous job of it.
The building and court yard are beautiful and clean. It dates back to the sixth century, but yet it has been updated with modern conveniences without destroying the old.
It is located inside the Old Wall part of the city.
Oh, they only have 24 rooms, but they have underground parking!
On a tour of central Portugal we stayed here for one night - and wished we could have stayed longer. Totally agree with all the previous comments - the welcome you receive is as if you are visiting friends. Hotel is spotlessly clean - breakfast is amazing and everybody we met was just charming and could not have been more helpful. If you have the chance , do not miss staying in this hotel - we are already trying to plan a return visit.
Evora was our first venture away from Lisbon on our Portugal vacation. We had picked the hotel based on the website and as soon as we arrived we knew we were not going to be disappointed. The open patio area was colorful and welcoming and the underground parking was a blessing. We were greeted so warmly and given a tour of the hotel which was immaculate and very comfortable. We loved the way the history of the building was preserved and yet every modern convenience and comfort was in place. The decor blended the past and the present beautifully. Peter and Nina, the owners, could not have been more friendly and accommodating. And their organic breakfast was great. We felt the history and adventure of foreign travel, and yet we felt very much at home there.
