Ermida de S. Braz
by johnsakura
This old Ermida comes from the portuguese late gothic period. Portuguese mudejar.
This chapel or "Ermida" is llocated in the Rossio of Évora which is located on the lower South part of the city after all the existing walls. You have to go down from the Main Square Praca do Giraldo in direction of the Public Garden or the S. Francisco Church. Its quite interesting this kind of construction here. It doesn't have any surrounding buildings which gives you a nique opportunity of enjoying its architecture.
Inside it has wonderful green/white tiles that remember indeed arab influences like the ones you can actually found anywhere else that has a mosque.
Broken window

In Evora there are so many old building not being used. It's encredible how badly this city is being used in term of real estate procedures. Like for instenses: students are being riped off all the time while renting rooms to people that don't pass recipt and for this escape finalcial and legal bills while by law they couldn't rent for a certain percentage of they actual bill also. So you have people that have a house for already 60 years paying rent that hasn't been actulized for another 50 and they pay 5 euros for a big house (price from 50 years ago), and they ask for students for 150 euros for a room. What should happen is that the city hall should make a search to all the people that are not using the law decently in order to make rents to lower. Like I was saying there are hundreds of old empty houses inseide castle walls that could be reconstructed by the government and give shelter to students for a more decent preice. Even 150 or 200 euros for a room ok, no problem but with decent conditions, nice plumbing, good painting, full kitchen etc... This windows is near Patio de Salema on our way to the Palace of S. Pedro. This window belongs to a very big house owned by an old recreative association called JOaquim Antonio de Aguiar. During evenings, they pass nice choosen movies for people to see for an affordable preice. like 1.5 euros for entries.
the idea of the Bones church
by globetrott
Franciscan monks always had a look at the death that differs a lot from others and you will find some special ways to bury dead bodies in franciscan churches all over the world. In a way they try to show that once that you are dead the remains of your body are worthless, no matter whether you had been a king or just a beggar and it is important to behave well, so your soul may go to heaven.
In Franziscaner Kirche in Vienna you will see a headbone with a crown
In Brno/Czech Rep. you will see dead bodies lying on the ground, still dressed and mumyfied by the special air there in the krypta.
I heard about a similar place in Sicilly but have not been there yet.
White houses with yellow or blue stripes
by micas_pt
Évora’s typical houses, as well as in the Alentejo region, are painted in white and have blue or yellow stripes around the windows, doors and at the bottom. Some say that the blue stripes were meant to keep the bad spirits way from the house and owners. I wonder if the yellow has the same meaning, probably it does.
