Nice hotel, very poor restaurant

The hotel is very well located between the Cathedral and a Roman temple, in an old monastery. Clean rooms, friendly staff at the reception and the bar. The restaurant though (food wise) was a very bad experience. After a bad meal in town, we came back to the restaurant for some appetizers. We ordered 3 of them and waited 30 minutes. The food was definitely not worth the wait. The spinach/apple salad is basically a pile of spinach leaves with big chunks of apple. The pork appetizer was some kind of fried dumpling with a dime size portion of pork inside and nondescript salad and tomatoes on the side. Same bland garnish for the third app, which I cannot remember. This is worse than a diner in what should be (price wise and location wise) a gourmet restaurant. Apparently, the management company does not care very much about the quality of the food served to what they know to be non-repeat guests. Nice hotel, but skip the restaurant (breakfast though is good, if you skip the charcuterie).

Best Location

I never stayed there - as a matter of fact I never slept in Evora, less than two hours distant from my home bed, but if I had to choose a hotel this would be the one - unless the price...
Perfectly located, not only it allows to easily visit the historic area, as it makes part of it.

Evora's Old Monestary turned Gorgeous Pousada

If you want to stay in the most memorable location during your stay in Evora, the Pousada dos Loios is the obvious choice. I spent my first night in Portugal here, and it was a great way to start my vacation. The staff were attentive, the rooms (called "cells" since they used to house the monks' quarters) comfortable, the food and wine served at the restaurant in the cloisters excellent, and the setting unforgettable. The prices are a bit steep, but if you can afford it, it is well worth it.

Unique Quality: I had fun exploring the Pousada dos Loios, so much so that I had to remind myself to get out and see the town of Evora! Dining in the cloisters was a great experience, though the fare and service at dinner was much better than the selection at the included breakfast. There is an outdoor pool in a secluded area which looked nice; unfortunately it was too cool in April for me to be able to try it out. By far, the magical location is what makes this place special. You leave the converted monestary and the Roman Temple stares you down...unforgettable.

Fancy Bedroom

Our bedroom was very clean, modern and comfortable. It was located on the ground floor at the rear of the pensao and it had two windows that opened onto a nice view of their walled grounds. These grounds were quite large, and also had a number of orange trees growing there in full fruit!

This room had some peculiarities that I had not encountered before. The room key came with an attached card that had to be inserted into a slot inside the room before any of the electrical outlets would work. Also, in this as well as some other places we stayed in Portugal, the bathtub has a cord that you can pull in an emergency to summon help - presumably if you have slipped and hurt yourself or something similar.

Unique Quality: We were sitting here chatting away when we had a very pleasant 'Local Custom' surprise!

Evora

Located in the 15th Century Convent of dos Loios ... this is the ideal place from which to explore this beautiful and historic city. The rooms are small but tasteful. The linens are fine portugese cottons and the general sense of the pousada is subdued. The restaurant in the refectory serves superb portugese cuisine.
