Travel Tips for Batalha

Guess the 3 differences

by solopes

Three small details make these two pictures in Batalha a little bit different. Will you find them ? Solution:

1 - At left the monastery was absolutely secondary. At right it catches all the attention

2 - Left, the bride waits for her husband to take the picture. Right, she is somewhere home, waiting for her husband to post this tip.

3 - Left, the stone evidences its 600 years in place. Right, 27 years of pollution have been added.

Walking the halls

by TinKan

You will find this to be a welcome break from the heat of the summer. Take a gentle walk down the halls and through the church and you will be transported back in time to the early days of the monastery when monks and royality walked the halls.

Aljubarrota

by solopes

The monastery was built to celebrate a great victory against the Spanish, that saved our independence. The hero was Nuno Alvares Pereira, that later, distributed by the poor all his great fortune and became a monk. He was, recently proclaimed saint by the Pope, under the name of Nuno de Santa Maria.

In Batalha he is still remembered by his military role.

Western Porch

by salinhopt

The western porch, ornamented by a tangled mass of Gothic sculpture of saints and other figures, sits beneath a stained-glass window of blue, mauve, and amber. The windows are of exceptional beauty and are best enjoyed on a sunny day. As windows were damaged over the centuries, various artisans have replaced them in their original 16th-century Manueline detail.

Santa Maria da Vitoria Monastery

by ania70pl

It's classified in UNESCO's International Heritage list. Was built in 14th-16th centuries to commemorate the battle in 1385. King John I promised to Virgin Mary to dedicate a temple to Her if he overcame the invader in this battle, decisive for consolidating the independence of Portugal and bringing the new dynasty of Avis to the throne.
