Forte de Cascais
by ncfg
The Cidadela or the Fort of Cascais is dated from 16th century and it was built to protect the Bay of Cascais. It is part of a whole line of fortresses along the Tagus River that were built to protect Lisbon from being invaded.
From there you can appreciated a lovely view.
Cidadela - Proctecting The Atlantic Coast

During the age of sail the Portuguese protected their coast and shipping by constructing a number of forts in strategic positions along the coast . The Cascais Cidadela is at typical example of these defensive forts and is prominent as it overlooks the Bay of Cascais.
Built during the 16th century it remains in good condition and as you walk north of the town to the marina you will pass beneath the huge walls. We actually walked inside the fortification.
In 1870 the royal family chose the Cascais Citadel as its official palace of residence during the summer period. King Carlos 1 would swim regularly in the Bay of Cascais.
CASCAIS CITADEL - CIDADELA
by LoriPori
Located on the western side of Cascais Bay, the CIDADELAis a 17th century fortification situated by the sea.
From 1870 to 1908, The Royal Family chose the Cascais Citadel as its official place of residence due to its location, natural environment, temperate climate and the quality of its sea waters.
The town has a military museum located in the Citadel.
From the top of the fort, there are wonderful views of the fishing harbour and Cascais Town.

Doubt; just a info.

Some time ago I wrote atip about the big park where the Museu Condes de Castro Guimaraes is located. I am not sure about the name of this park. Is this Parque Municipal da Gandarinha, or Parque Marechal Carmona?

hi We had 7 days in Cascais in Sept, 2008 and our accommodation was 200 metres from condes de Castro-Guimaraes a most beautiful palace built in 1892 and now a museum.
The park behind the museum is well worth visiting, Parque Municipal. You can easily walk there from the town, just continue past the Cidadela (fort).
Good luck,
Mike

is easy to "confuse" the parks
the museum is within what is called the Parque Marechal Carmona,
but the Gandarinha is just next to it

Thanks for the correction. I looked on my tourist map but could only see Parque Municipal printed. The park behind the museum is very good, it also has a mini zoo which we did not enter but saw some peacocks etc.
