A fishing village
by acilina
Ericeira is a fishing village 50 km (31 miles) northeast of Lisbon, 25 km (16 miles) from Sintra and 10 km (6 miles) from Mafra. It has the Atlantic Ocean as an eternal companion. Out of this relationship, the sun has given the best of its light and an ocean of traditions has been born.

Walking on the streets of Ericeira you can find laundry lines outside of the windows, but instead of laundry, Ericeirans dry the fish on them.
That is the local way, people preserved fish for years.

Surf the heavy reefs
by mocca
Well, if you bodyboard or surf you have heard of Ericeira with its many reefs, points and beach breaks.
Withing 10Km you can find something for anybody. Heavy 12 foot reefs, super shallow and hollow reefs. Nice reefbreaks, good pointbreaks.
And the beauty is, that with any swell directions, some reef or beach will be going off, and it will start <1 feet and get over 12. Make sure that you know what you can and want to surf, as you could use your quiver of boards. Just make sure that the leashes are strong enough as the waves are powerfull.
Foz do LIzandro

In 1971 I was taken at night to a terrific place for military training. I had to descend in slide, from a steep hill to what seemed to be a beach. 36 years later I went back to that place, about 10 km south of Ericeira, and... terrific? My God! How subjective things can be. It's a common empty beach, with a calm small river and... the hills of memory!
Seafood Vivariums in the Furnas

Eating seafood is "mandatory" in Ericeira, and you may stroll on the cliffs, watching the holes made in the rocks to keep the lobsters (now empty, I think). Most people use these cliffs to lay in the sun, catching the strong iodine.
