Fishing
by solopes
Ericeira was, in the 18th century, one of the more important fishing places of Portugal (the proximity of Lisbon being the reason). The conditions of the harbour are hard, and the development moved that importance to other ports - in Lisbon's area, for instance, Peniche and Sesimbra.
Tourism became the first activity, but fishing keeps present, nowadays more sportive than professional.
Popular events

In the small villages of Portugal, mainly in the north, during the summer, is common to find some festivities, with not much than an opportunity for meeting people and chat. Some (generally bad) music, popular cakes and vendors, and that's all. I was not expecting it in winter, in a touristy place like Ericeira, but... I found it. Funny!
It happens in December 8th, a national holiday.

This picture is from Ericeira. It is nice little village north from Lisboa.
The views from this bench is marvellous, especially at sunsets.
In the village are excellent fishfood restaurants.
We stayed at Hotel de turismo das Ericeira, wich has beautiful views to Atlantic ocean. There is also couple of swimming pools(one with sea-water).
Good value, absolutely.
Take a day trip to Sintra
by mocca
It is a nice getaway from Ericiera, and it isn't too far. It takes just over an hour if you take the bus. If you have your own transportation, it only takes about half an hour to get to Sintra.
Just go there wander around it's narrow alleyways and feel the old times come to life again.
Pillory
by solopes
Medieval symbol of justice, most of the small towns with discreet history are proud of their pillory. Ericeira is no exception, and in 1924 reconstructed it, with the original stones buried in place when Ericeira was lowered from "vila" to "freguesia".
Dated from the XIV century it still keeps the rings were the convicted were tied.
