Travel Tips for Estoril

ESTORIL CASTLE - CHALET BARROS

by LoriPori

Estoril has its own medieval castle, right on the seashore. It is massive and quite impressive. I will call it ESTORIL CASTLE as I could not find out anything about it. The girl behind the desk at the Estoril Turismo was a little embarrassed to admit that she didn't know what it was called or anything about it. I googled it - lots of pictures, but no information about it showed up! If anyone does know about it, please let me know. Obridgada!

Update: July 20, 2006
JLBG, you are a magician. You suggested it might be Fort da Cruz. I googled it and there it was. I found out it is now known as CHALET BARROS.

Just past the Tamariz Beach, you will see Forte da Cruz, or Old Fort of Santo Antonio da Cruz, a former fortress that protected the Bay against invaders. Over the years, it became obsolete, so financier Joao Martins de Barros bought it in 1894 and transformed it into a villa - Chalet Barros.

Estoril

"Estoril"

I had these these forgotten pics in my computer, so better to put them on VT and write something about it.

Estoril is a suburb west of Lisbon, close to Cascais. It's beyond the Tagus estuary, so it has a beach by the sea.
It's a tourist resort with many hotels and it's a kind of posh place. It's maybe cheaper than other posh places in Europe but it's defined as an upper class place.
It has a beach that looks like the Mediterranean sea, relatively narrow and with flat sea.
Besides, it is a suburb of Lisbon, mostly wealthy, with residents that commute everyday to work in the city of Lisbon.
It boasts Europe's largest casino, seen from the railway, and further uphill, Estoril's race course, once used for F1 competitions and still used for Portugal's Grand Prix in MotoGP.

The pic of the beach was taken in March. Cloudy weather and empty. In the Summer it's so full of people, you can barely see the sand. It's not the best beach of Portugal, but it's handy to come from Lisbon.

"ESTORIL CASTLE"

I tried everything to find out about ESTORIL CASTLE. I googled it - nothing!! I had asked about it at Estoril Turismo - the girl didn't know anything about it. All I could find out was that it was owned by the Royal Family of Monaco. That's it. So please, if anyone knows anything about it, let me know. Obrigada!
