Weekend Trip

by diverbh4

Hello all!

I am a 22 year old and I will be taking a trip to Lisbon at the end of this month (May 28-30). I am looking for some good sights to see in the area. I don't mind running around the city to find sights as I see that as part of the experience as well.

I am also looking for some good cheap eats also.

I am staying near Bairro Alto...I know should be interesting haha

If anyone would like to meet up while I am there that would be fun :o) I do speak some Spanish but primarily English.

Well, my favourite restaurant in Lisbon is Leitaria Academica. It is located near the Carmo Convent in the Barrio Alto. See my Lisbon page for the right address and location.

Don't miss Belèm. It's part of Lisbon and easily reachable by tram from Pr. do Comercio. There you can visit the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos.

Hi Bill,

Defo check out Belem area & all the cool sculptures re the Age of Discoveries. Sample some of the world-famous custard tarts there. Go up Santa Justa Elevador, up the Castelo; do a half-day trip to Sintra.

To meet a cool, hospitable local, and to check tips on good places for a bite/drink check out member: a2lopes' pages.

Lisbon is really quirky. I liked it.

And you cannot miss bacalhao - salted cod! They claim there are 1001 recipes!

A good restuarant is Churrasqueira do Campo Grande (one of the best restaurants in the city for a grill meal, not just for chicken but local favorites like grilled cod fish with punched potatoes, olive oil and lots of garlic). Just across the metro station in Campo Grande (green and yellow lines), Campo Grande 402/410, phone 217590131.

take time to look thru so many members's Lisbon pages on all facets of the city and you're sure to get a good idea and loads of suggestions

you've picked a most interesting neighborhood to stay at - Bairro Alto

you're spanish will serve you somehow and english as well but try to pick up a few phrases of Portuguese as a courtesy to the natives, you'll go far in your dealings with them

Lisbon is one heck of a fabulous city, you'll love it.

I wish you are going to looove this city as I did. I had three days one of which I spent with a daytrip to Sintra, Estoril, Cascais etc, so in two days a managed to see a lot. The following list is from my Lisbon page, the order is random.

*Belem, Torre de Belem (Tower of Belem),
*Padrao dos Descobrimentos (Monument of discoveries)
*Walk in Alfama, Baixa, Chiado
*Miradouro de Santa Luzia
*Walk in Rato-Bairo Alto
*Jardim Botanico
*Se
*Elevador de Santa Justa
*Basilica de Estrela
*Oceanario
*Centro Vasco da Gama
*Avenida da Liberdade
*Praca de Comercio
Tram 28 is famous for going around most of the popular places to the travelers. If you care to find out more, I have put some links there (http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/13817c/45daa/) for anybody, you may want to check them out, and of course, all the other Lisbon pages on VT!
Have a great weekend!

Travel Tips for Lisbon

txBelem Sightseeing

by Toyin

Most of my stay in Lisbon was all around Belem. This is because I was told before I left that this is where the attractions are. Also, I took an hotel in Belem. So, it was easy to do the tour of most of the touristic place on foot. The monument in this picture was taken in the belem park, which is very well positioned close to the water front. Across the monument lies the Presidents house, and the whole place was quite and the feeling is just great. Lots of flowes, trees good company of other tourist that are having a look in the woods.

A big problem

by TheWanderingCamel

There's just so much about Lisbon that is charming but, oh dear, do they have a problem with graffiti! It is everywhere - defacing beautiful old buildings, scrawled over the trams and elevadores, on shops and houses, windows and doors, worse in back streets but very few streets seem to escape the blight altogether. There are few places these days that don't have some problem with the wretched stuff but Lisbon's truly was one of the worst I've seen.

...This and the above photos...

...This and the above photos have been taken at Amoreiras area (just next to our hotel);
however the best place to get the whole picture of it is at Bairro da Serafina. I only saw from the car window!
Notice also the bright blue azulejos.

Tiles - Azulejos

by HORSCHECK

Azulejos are colourful ceramic tiles which are very popular in Portugal for decoration puposes. You find them inside and outside of houses, public buildings, monuments or metro stations. They often show geometric designs or images. Azulejos were brought to Portugal by the Moors in the 8th century.

Pack as Light as You Can

by AlPhilip

Pack as light as you can, it is a big advice I assure you. A study has proved that a large percentage of what you pack is never used. In the winter it rains often so an umbrella or rain coat is a good thing to bring. In the summer bring some shorts and tshirts, it is very warm. Some comfortable running shoes are very handy. You can find anything here. The same as above. What can I say? Sunglasses?
