Off the Beaten Path- Lisbon

by Ineedtogo

Everyone travelling to Lisbon knows that they MUST visit two districts in Lisbon:
The Alfama and Belem.
I would like to know the names of other districts are other places in Lisbon that are not full of tourists. In these places, I want to meet real Portugeuse people, and have an experience I will never forget.
From what I hear, Lisbon is a magnificent city.
I really want to experience this wonderful city with locals, not tourists just off the plane from Chicago.
Thanks, Please help!!!

alfama is not that full of tourists and you can easily meet the locals there.
belem is more touristy cause there is not that many people living down there, but alfama is a recidencial area where many of the locals go out in the evening.

Re: Off the Beaten Path- Lisbon

The Portuguese are - to your own delight - in every neighborhood of this great city, even in those more celebrated and sought after by most tourists such as the Alfama and Bairro Alto.

Certainly there are existing neighborhoods in and around Lisbon that don't attract as many visitors/tourists, neighborhoods in the old city such as Alcantara, Santa Cruz, Mouraria, Ajuda and many many more...all within easy reach by effecient public transport or on foot (make sure to equip yourself with good walking shoes, Lisbon can be daunting for the heels for her steep climbs and swift descents).

You might make a quick visit to the main tourist office at Praca dos Restauradores to give you a map and offer you far more detailed scenerios on the different neighborhoods you have in mind.

As my friends Claus and Gabriel pointed, you can easily see locals in all destinations of Lisbon.

Most of the more well known tourist locations in the town centre, such as the historic neighbourhoods of Alfama, Bairro Alto, Mouraria, Castelo are also our favorite places of the town, to hang out and have a drink or eat dinner.

Belem and Sintra, during the week, is where you will find mostly tourists. But even here, on weekends, there are lots of local families.

Enjoy your stay, and if you need any help, let me know.

Travel Tips for Lisbon

The Pump House

by ratherton

If you want an English pub in Lisbon then the Pump House is a good place to go. We used this as our meeting point before all England’s games during Euro 2004 (only the ones in Lisbon obviously). They have a big screen where they show live sports and there is a reasonable bar menu including a Full English Breakfast – a must for every Englishman (or woman) abroad.

Directions: From Cais do Sodre, walk down Rua dos Morales past O’Gillins. Rua da Moeda is 5th street on the right on junction with a small post office

The district of Belem is located a few miles from the centre of Lisbon: it's on the Tagus river and it's the city's original port. it's also the place that's brought Lisbon to be listed as a UNESCO place - because of its amazing monuments. The monuments: old ones like the tower of Belem, and new ones like the monument to the nation’s Age of Discoveries. And then again the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos: never have I seen such intricate patterns on a monastery. It's a real delight to the eyes.

Miradouro Santa Luzia, view of Alfama
Along the route of “eléctrico 28” there is a good view of the Alfama quarter. You see the red roofs fitting into eachother and in the background the river Tejo to the east. At the miradouro there is a lovely open air café where you can get a good espresso (called “uma bica”). This picture was not taken there!

Portuguese drink coffee at any time of day. What some people don't know is that we drink small amounts of coffee at a time. So if you'd rather have a somewhat longer coffee ask for "cheio" (something like shayoo).

Packing List

by mauro_pd

I went by air: no problem for the airport transfers, they have a service called aero-bus which provide more space than usual for baggages; be careful when you leave from the city to the apt cause sometimes aero-bus (aka line 91) is really crowded. Take your time and consider you maybe have to skip a run to catch the following one ... I was there september 8 thru 11 and I was ok with shorts and t-shirts. As ususal batteries for digicam could be hard to find ... A city map with bus-tram plan could help a lot when planning visits to museum & so on ...
