1964 Visit
by grandmaR
My sister and I stayed here with my niece who was a year old at the time. We loved this hotel, but we stayed there 45 years ago. We came by train and it was very centrally located. I'm not sure who made the reservation but according to the internet, ... you will be able to see the Mario Viegas Theatre, Sao Carlos National Theatre and the renovated Museum of Chiado. .. Barrio Alto can be reached in just 50 seconds walking from the hotel, and it will only take you 10 minutes to get to the airport and 2 minutes to get to the train station.
I think the Sao Carlos National Theatre is what is visible under the window awning in my picture.
Unique Quality: This is what I wrote at the time:
Our room at Hotel Borges was large, with bath. It looked out on the Rua Garrett, a busy shopping street right in the middle of town. So we could switch off, shopping while my niece napped. The baby's crib is Italian Renaissance
According to websites wireless internet is available in public areas and costs EUR 5.00 per 24 hours. For my niece, their current policy is that all children under 2 years stay free of charge for cots. Breakfast is included in the price now, but I don't think that was the policy then.
Directions: In the old area of the city near Santa Justa Elevator

Adequate Accomodation in Nice Area
by Over60
I spent one night here in late summer, 2008. The hotel is located in a pedetstrianized area near the city center and about 15 minutes walk from the castle. My room was clean and air conditioned, but amenities were few. For example, there was no printed guide to the hotel and its services or nearby attractions. There was a small television, but I was never able to figure out how the control for it worked, and there were no instructions. The staff at the front desk were courteous and spoke good English, but they always seemed harried and distracted and were far from gracious or helpful. Breakfast was included, but it consisted only of tasteless rolls and croissants, extremely watery orange juice, and surprisingly good coffee from a machine. This was a shame, as breakfast is served in a large and ornate room, which could have been very pleasant if only the windows had not all been shuttered. Still, the hotel was on the whole acceptable and the price is in the low end of what's available.
Unique Quality: good location
Directions: near center

Good bang for your buck
by SergioT123
Me and a friend stayed in here in the summer of 06. only drawlback is the noise. There could be a lot of noise , especialy in the summer months when there be a lot of tourists.
Unique Quality: cheap and good location and a view.

Inspection needed
by Raskyvb
Location is unique, but service is poor or non existent. You've first to inspect your room as our was quite stinky (mould and sewer), heating didn't work and bathroom wasn't that clean. It's an hotel that had its fame some time ago but didn't improve to modern times. We asked to change room and it was much better.
Directions: Metro Baixa/Chiado, Chiado exit

Unbeatable central location!
by vanessadb
Wonderful location and big clean rooms for an affordable price. We asked for a quiet room and got it. However, the electronic card key system is kind of ***ty (tricky to lock your room when you leave) and so the loud banging of the doors starts at 8h in the morning! Not good when you like to sleep late in the morning like us ;-)
Unique Quality: It's unique and best quality is its very central location: walk 5 minutes and you reach the station of Cais de Sodre (to cross the river or take the train to Cascais or Sintra) as well as the Baixa district. The Bairro Alto, the best for nightlife is not even a 5 minute walk. Last but not least, the famous tram 28 to go to the Castle and Alfama is only meters away!
We paid 75€ per night for a double room which it includes breakfast served from 7h-10h.
Directions: Chiado

Affordable well-located Lisboa hotel
by jaros about Hotel Borges
Chiado location could hardly be improved, as the hotel is within walking distance of interesting things to see and do, fado restaurants, and transportation. The price is modest and rooms are large although the quality varies from one floor to another. (We stayed there twice; once in a nearly shabby room on a lower floor and once in a very nice room on an upper floor.) The breakfast room must have been stunning once upon a time but now begs for a bit of loving renovation. Although taxis cannot drop you off at the door of the hotel because of the pedestrian praça, the hike is no further than it would be across a major hotel's lobby. There is a Metro entrance in front of the hotel. And you can easily descend to the Baixa via escalator in the shopping center at the end of the street, by elevator/lift, or walk it.
