A place to sleep
by mcb about Residencial Lisbonense
I wasn't there but some friend stayed there 3 nights.
They told it was ok.
small bedroom but clean, good and clean bathroom and nice people. Near Metro, shopping, and restaurants, a good Lisbon Zone, less then one km to Marques de Pombal
Nothing more to say. just a place where you can sleep, clean and cheap.
Residencial Dom Jose

For as little as 15 euros a night (out of season) this hotel is excellent value for money for such a centrally located hotel. I paid 30 euros for a room with cable TV and en suite bath, which I thought very reasonable. It's a bit scruffy, and it's at the top of about four flights of steep stairs, so bear that in mind. The area is pretty nice, although like everywhere in central Lisbon you aren't too far away from somewhere seedy. The area around the Praca Marques de Pombal isn't very touristy, but it's relatively quite and safe. There's a conveniently located underground stop just a couple of hundred meters from the hotel.
It's clean and convenient, and as long as you aren't looking for four star comfort is perfect for the price. You can also conveniently reserve online from the web site.
As an additional note, taxi drivers have no idea where this hotel is, so print out the map from their web site to show them. It saved me tons of hassle explaining it to them.
Praca Marques de Pombal

The Praca Marques de Pombal is located between the Liberty Avenue and Eduardo VII garden. In the centre of this square is the statue of Pombal. He was the responsible for the reconstraction of Lisbon after the devastating 1755 earthquake. On this monument, the marquis stands on top of the column with his hand on a lion overlooking downtown Lisbon.

Hi -
Travelling to Lisbon, for the 2nd time, on Tuesday; staying until Friday. Last trip wasn't that successful in the dining department. It would be nice if things improved for this go-round.
The hotel will be in the Marques de Pombal region. Can anyone advise on some good, non-rip-off restaurants nearby? (We're avoiding the area near the bridge, since all we hear about it are bad things.)
Many thanks in advance.

You could catch a bus to Amoreiras shopping center from Marques de Pombal Square. There are lots of restaurants there.

Take the subway to Baixa-Chiado ( 2 stops) and walk to bairro alto. There you will find different types of restaurants: expensive and non-expensive, modern or tradicional, italian, indian, etc. In cheaper restuarants you can get a meal for 7 to 8 euros ( drinks and starters not included).

One more thing: lisbon is starting to celebrating "santos populares", so in typical neighbourhoods like bairro, bica, alfama you will see a lot of improvised restaurants on the streets selling sardines, rosted chicken, small steaks in bread called " bifanas" or "pregos". Check it out. The big celebration day it will be in the night of june, 12.
