Excellent Hotel without great food

It is conveniently located, right next to Metro and Praca Marques Pombal. The rooms were nice and comfortable, the staff was always welcoming and smiling (something that is awfully missing in so many Lisbon hotels). The rooms are very comfortable, except that in official winter time the ACs don't work, although the temperature outside can be in upper 20s.

The TV channels are very nice and usually will have most of the live sports as well.

The biggest plus is the high speed internet, which is free. The biggest drawback is the breakfast, which cries for variety and some quality. Overall, I will rate it around 4.2 of 5.

Unique Quality: Location, pricing, high speed internet, TV

Good value for your money

Nice hotel located on Av. da Liberdade, 10 minutes walk to the city center. Bathroom is a bit too small acording to my standards.
I paid about 50% of the published rate by booking it online.

Unique Quality: Free high-speed internet access in all rooms (RJ45 ethernet plug).

Not so friendly hostel

As I mentioned, Lisbon was our first city during our 3 month long trip to Europe. We took a flight from Memphis to Newark & had a 6 hour layover. We then took a flight that landed us in Lisbon early the next morning. Needless to say we were extremely tired & couldn't wait to find our hostel & take showers. When we finally found the place they wouldn't let us check in. They said we couldn't check in until 3:00, but they would let us store our luggage there until then. We weren't too happy about that since we were so tired. They didn't seem to care much. They wouldn't even let us use the showers until we checked in. So instead we went to the bathroom & had to wash our faces and brush our teeth so we could make it through the day. We decided to go find a bus tour so we could get a brief overview of the city. We ended up falling asleep on it, but when we were awake we saw some really cool things. I wish we could've found those places again. I also remember one morning we were trying to plan our day in the breakfast room. We had finished eating, but we had our maps out & we were trying to figure out the best route to take for that day. We didn't realize it, but breakfast time was over & many people had already cleared out of there. We didn't realize we had to leave immediately, but the ladies that were cleaning off the tables started yelling at us in Portugese. We assumed they wanted us to leave. Really, they could've just said anything & we wouldn't have known what they had said, but had they said it more politely we still would've figured out that they wanted us to leave. They didn't have to be so rude about it. They didn't stop until we were completely out of the door either. You would think after they saw us making an effort to gather our things & walk out of the door they would've stopped, but they continued yelling at us & waving us towards the door until we were gone. I do not recommend staying at this hostel. Especially not if it's your first stop after a long flight.

More about Hotel Marques De Pombal

A place to sleep

by mcb about Residencial Lisbonense

I wasn't there but some friend stayed there 3 nights.
They told it was ok.
small bedroom but clean, good and clean bathroom and nice people. Near Metro, shopping, and restaurants, a good Lisbon Zone, less then one km to Marques de Pombal

Nothing more to say. just a place where you can sleep, clean and cheap.

Residencial Dom Jose

by antistar about Residencial Dom Jose

For as little as 15 euros a night (out of season) this hotel is excellent value for money for such a centrally located hotel. I paid 30 euros for a room with cable TV and en suite bath, which I thought very reasonable. It's a bit scruffy, and it's at the top of about four flights of steep stairs, so bear that in mind. The area is pretty nice, although like everywhere in central Lisbon you aren't too far away from somewhere seedy. The area around the Praca Marques de Pombal isn't very touristy, but it's relatively quite and safe. There's a conveniently located underground stop just a couple of hundred meters from the hotel.

It's clean and convenient, and as long as you aren't looking for four star comfort is perfect for the price. You can also conveniently reserve online from the web site.

As an additional note, taxi drivers have no idea where this hotel is, so print out the map from their web site to show them. It saved me tons of hassle explaining it to them.

Praca Marques de Pombal

by dimilag

The Praca Marques de Pombal is located between the Liberty Avenue and Eduardo VII garden. In the centre of this square is the statue of Pombal. He was the responsible for the reconstraction of Lisbon after the devastating 1755 earthquake. On this monument, the marquis stands on top of the column with his hand on a lion overlooking downtown Lisbon.

Recent Restaurant Recommendations

Hi -

Travelling to Lisbon, for the 2nd time, on Tuesday; staying until Friday. Last trip wasn't that successful in the dining department. It would be nice if things improved for this go-round.

The hotel will be in the Marques de Pombal region. Can anyone advise on some good, non-rip-off restaurants nearby? (We're avoiding the area near the bridge, since all we hear about it are bad things.)

Many thanks in advance.

You could catch a bus to Amoreiras shopping center from Marques de Pombal Square. There are lots of restaurants there.

Take the subway to Baixa-Chiado ( 2 stops) and walk to bairro alto. There you will find different types of restaurants: expensive and non-expensive, modern or tradicional, italian, indian, etc. In cheaper restuarants you can get a meal for 7 to 8 euros ( drinks and starters not included).

One more thing: lisbon is starting to celebrating "santos populares", so in typical neighbourhoods like bairro, bica, alfama you will see a lot of improvised restaurants on the streets selling sardines, rosted chicken, small steaks in bread called " bifanas" or "pregos". Check it out. The big celebration day it will be in the night of june, 12.
