Since this was our first time in Portugal, and we were not sure how easy it would be to find a Residencial or Pensao in its downtown area, we played it safe and booked ourselves into a hotel just outside the main tourist area. The Hotel Ibis in Saldanha served our needs well with its clean and not overly expensive rooms. Just down the street was a small supermarket where we could buy whatever supplies we needed for our 3-day stay in Lisbon. The hotel is within walking distance of the tourist area but you have to keep your wits about you to find your way back throught the twisting streets in the darkness!
Unique Quality: Each small room has a private bathroom and twin beds. Breakfast for two costs E9 and consists of the usual fruit, yoghurt, cereal, toast, slices of ham and cheese with juice and the black Portugese coffee. They have a bar area in the hotel and also the restaurant serves evening meals. After a couple of tiring days we tried their restaurant with mixed success - the quiche was good but their hake medallions with coriander was very bland!
The staff were always helpful. Rooms were E59 (US$72) per night without breakfast.
Directions: Saldanha area, just north of the Baixa squares.
