Am coming over for the Everton v Benfica game on 22nd October

by RoyJ

thinking of staying in the Oasis Mansion Hostel in 24 R. de Santa Catarina, Lisbon 1200. Is this a good place to be for the bars etc and is it fairly safe to walk from here I checked out Google Streetmaps and the roads around look really scruffy with graffiti everywhere. What do you think? and is there anywhere nearby where I can leave my car cheaply?

Cheers
Roy

one tip mate.
if a scruffy looking guy shows you where you can park your car you will need to tip him.
the drug addicts in lisbon have their own little mafia where they look after cars at big parking lots and if they are not tipped for looking after them they will scratch the car while you are away.
this is mostly by the big shopping centers they operate, but just be aware that if you come across them don´t tell them to f#ck off eventhough this is often what one feels like.

and grafitti should not be a problem in itself as they have that in most parts of lisbon and it´s generally not a dangorous place to wander around at night.

You don't need a car in Lisbon as parking is impossible and the traffic horrendous. If the hotel doesn't have a car park, I don't think you will have much joy in that district of narrow, crowded streets. It's a good area for the city centre though, which is a few minutes walk. Graffiti is endemic in Lisbon as in most other big cities.

The stadium though is around 4 miles away and you might wish to take the metro to Colegio Militar/Luz station.

Would it be best to find somewhere to park outside the city centre, maybe nearer Estadia de Luz, and get the train back into the city to spend some time there durign the day and then get the train back out again to the stadium?

Travel Tips for Lisbon

Lisbon

Mouraria

by 64novpt

The Mouraria covers the foothills and slopes of the Castle at the north side, dilating to the gates of São Vicente, now the "rua do Arco do Marques de Alegrete".
Mouraria, so designated after D. Afonso Henriques send the Moors, driven from its stronghold, to that location. Moors lived there free, kept their customs, practiced their religion, they spoke Arabic and were governed by a mayor. So it was until 1497, when D. Manuel I expelled Jews and Moors from Portugal. However, the term remains to this day. The Mouraria evokes times of dark deeds, knife and slap frequented by fado and vagabonds of Alfama and Bairro Alto. Today is mainly picturesque.

MOSTEIRO DOS JERÓNIMOS

Because of Vasco da Gama´s return, the monastery - Mosteiro dos Jerónimos - was orderded to be build by Dom Manuel I. The former chapel and the monastery used to be places where sailors kept their vigil before departing. The architecture is famous of it´s Manueline decoration and religious and secural carvings.

Seafood

Lisbon, and all of Portugal really, are perfect if you love seafood. Fresh fish is on just about every menu and is particularly good, as you would expect, as you get closer to the ocean.

This photo was taken in the Mercado da Ribeira, which is full of various crafts, foods and flowers.
