Lisbon or Gran Canaria Las Palmas?

by piglet44

Looking to spend 5-6 days in December for our silver wedding. DONT want a beach holiday.More into museums, scenery ,nice restaurants etc.
Trouble is we don't like the cold. Will Lisbon be very cold early December? And will it be rainy?
I heard that the Canaries are beautiful in the winter, but is there enough for us to see there? or would we prefer a city holiday??
cheers all

If you want museums - not beach holiday - then Lisbon is the only choice to make. If you´re worried about the weather then Gran Canaria is the best bet but unless you´re unlucky (with the occasional extra cold winter)then Lisbon isn´t TOO cold anyway. The thing is Gran Canaria isn´t really ALL that attractive except for its beaches, weather, and food - now let´s sit back and wait for the tons of protest! :)

Lisbon is lovely, and full of things to see, do and explore.

I have never been to the Canaries simply because I suspect there would not be enough to interest me....I do not 'do' beach holidays.

You will get a rough idea of weather from the BBC climate tables here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/world/city_guides/results.shtml?tt=TT004170

Your perception of 'very cold' will not be the same as mine, of course, but with appropriate clothes (layers are best) I think you will be fine. And it may well rain..no-one can predict the weather so far in advance....but there are umbrellas, and trams, and museums and cafes and restaurants a-plenty!

Indeed! Piglett, as I understand it, is a pet name for "pigmy" and I think she´s (he?) from the central forest of Zaire so just about any thing is bound to seem VERY COLD. :)

I was just judging by the fact that the OP lives in Israel, which tends to be generally just a bit warmer than the UK.

Oh well, Israel or the Zaire rain forest - What is it that everyone is so fond of saying ...... "It´s not the heat but the humidity that gets to you."

i am indeed in Jerusalem.Dont mind if it is a bit cold-don't really want lots of wind and pouring rain...

Impossible to predict that though.....you will just have to look at the climate tables and wotk out the chances! :-)

Hi

I think Lisbon is more interesting than Canaries because there are a lot of museums and monuments. Food is great! In December isn't very cold, sometimes it rains but sometimes is sunshine! If you need a place to stay i can tell you one that is situated in a calm neighborhood near the river and the center of the city.

Lisbon isn't too cold in the winter. There are lots of things to see there. I love that city.

Lisbon hands down.

She's got all plus more...and wintertime here (except north of Portugal) is deliciously mild dispensing with bulky and burdensome overcoats. Expect some rain here and there however this time of year.

Lisbon is a great city and its coastline is beautiful. Estoril is a nice reosrt with fine beaches and its worth the 3 km walk from Estoril to Cascais along the seafront. Cascais is a nice town with its small winding streets and little boutiques and its small port with all the boats coming in. Laying on the beach!

The cathedral

by santax

Lisbon's cathedral is a fortress-like building built in the 1100s, making it one of the city's oldest buildings. Within its cloisters are archeological excavations that have revealed Roman and Moorish finds.

Religion and beliefs

by solopes

Portuguese are traditionally catholics, tradition that is fading, mainly in big cities. Here and there religion is mixed with popular beliefs with stronger manifestations than the official religion. A medical doctor from the second half of the 19th century, Sousa Martins, dedicated his life fighting tuberculosis, with such empathy with his patients, that someone started saying that he made miracles. More than one hundred years after his death, people keeps praying for his help, and thanking him for the cure. The base of his statue, in front of a medical school, is covered with hundreds of stones celebrating his "miracles" and there is always an old lady bringing flowers or praying. A touching scene of the unknown Lisbon!

Have a funny moment at AMT-machine

by Turska

When we first time used the AMT we had a big laugh. When there was money in to take out, there was this little fellow smiling and jumping up and down :D But once they had problems with bank-connections to Finland, and this little fellow went very sad,and had his face "upside down".My husband said we should have these in Finland too!
