This monument was built in 1960 to celebrate the 500th birth anniversary of Henry the Navigator. Its located not far from the Belem Tower at the shore line. One of the figures next to Henry the Navigator on the monument is Christopher Columbus.

Before arriving in Lisbon go to http://www.visitlisboa.com/publicacoes.asp and get your Follow me Lisboa magazine copy and check what events will be held in town. Besides the events you have information on monuments, museums, restaurants, etc...
You can also see some brochures in http://www.visitportugal.com/pturismo/Downloads/download.aspx?tipo=2&Categoria=4&Page=1&SubCategoria=2.
A nice video about the country is posted in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhsZZz34AEY.
ALFAMA
by LysDor
Below Castelo there´s Alfama disctrict which atmosphere was created by the Moors.
During that time it used to be an upper-class residental area but after earthquakes this area has been a place for fishers.
We were here during the daylight as there are not so many interesting restaurants to be courageously explored in the dark evenings on these narrow alleys.
The snacks are not free!

An oddity is that at every restaurant you will be presented with some appetizers, usually just bread, but alsocheese, olives, meat etc. It's fine if you choose to eat them, but don't expect them to be free, becasue they are not. No matter what establishment you go to, these will be charged to you based on what you eat. The easiest way to avoid any charge (sometimes listed on the bill as 'couvert' or cover charge) is to send them back as soon as they arrive. Though sometimes you may decide you want to eat them (as I did once with some cheese) and the price is usually pretty low.
Free map of Lisbon
by HORSCHECK
Don't forget to pick up a free map of Lisbon at the Tourist Information Office or at the Lisbon Welcome Centre. I got a map which was sponsored by "El Corte Ingles", which is a big department store chain in Spain and Portugal. Besides a detailed city map it includes an overview of the metro network and information about hotels and sights
The Tourist Office is in Praca dos Restauradores in the Palacio de Foz, whereas the Lisbon Welcome Centre can be found at the Praca de Comercio near the waterfront.
