After a lot of indecision about where to stay in Lisbon, we eventually plumped for the Hotel Lisboa, just off Avenida da Liberdade. We chose it because it was four-star, but not too expensive, not too large (60 rooms), and within walking distance of the centre. We booked through ebookers.com, and paid 100 euros a night for a double room with breakfast included.
The location was great, an easy stroll down the hill into the city, although it did seem a long way back at night! There were bus stops nearby, including one for the Aerobus to the airport, and the Avenida station on the metro was also close by. As the hotel was just off the Avenida, there was little traffic noise either to keep you awake at night.
Our room was spacious and comfortable, although the bathroom was a bit dated. The public rooms were fine though, and the staff were excellent – very friendly and multi-lingual. Breakfast was buffet style, including bacon and eggs as well as fruit, cereals, bread, ham cheese, croissants etc etc. More than enough to set you up for the day!
The hotel is currently closed for refurbishment, and is due to re-open in April 2008. If we go back to Lisbon, I would certainly stay there again.

If you are staying any longer than 2 weeks I recommend that you rent a room.
The apartments like Lisbon itself are very clean although they may look basic from the outside. Apartments have all the appliances that modern life demands. Just view one and you will see..
Unique Quality: Try and get a room which is near to a transport route either bus or metro.
The cost should be in the region of 80euros per week.

Unique Quality: Homey four star hotel with an athmosphere. Close to Lisbon city centre, communications and airport (7 km). Friendly management. Renovated 1995.

We were at the AS Lisboa. A nice clean 3 star hotel. The breakfast was so-so, but that is everywhere in Lisbon, it's quite good. The AS Lisboa usually goes for about no more than $50 US a person for double room. If you are paying more, even in high season, your travel agent is making a big profit off you. All 3 stars are about that price, no exception for location.
About $45 US per person. The rooms are clean and spacious enough. It is a 3 star hotel, in Paris it would be considered a 4 star. It is built in 1993, and is well kept.
Unique Quality: Clean, relatively new. The view out the window was quite nice. Streets and a nice park beside, no other tall buildings in the way, see photo attached and website below. Malls, cafés, restaurants, there are many in the surroundings.

It was a good choice: we wanted to have a balcony to the south (in order to have a late breakfast there and some sun) and a good central location close to Avenida da Liberdade and Metro station.
Have a late drink at the bar - try the local port wine.

Me and my boyfriend will be traveling to Lisbon in january.
-We are searching a proper and clean budget accomodation (doube room) in the center of Lisbon for 4 or 5 nights.
We have a small budget and do not want to spend to much money on the accomodation as we want to see more of Lisbon.
-Can anyone help me to find a cheap and clean accomodation? The most important thing is that it is clean and warm since we will be there in january.

Browse Lisbon's downtown for "Pensões" (plural of "pensão", a cheap, sometimes lousy hostel) in Lisbon. They are safe and among the cheapest in Europe. The atmosphere is quite family style. The only thing is that you must ask to check the room before taking it, so as to see its cleanliness (75% chances to be clean).
If the receptionist doesn't speak English, you can use your hands and feet to communicate. He will trust you so much so that you can pay by check out (unless you only spend one night).
I wonder what is the tourist world doing in other freezing European cities (even Madrid is). Lisbon has cheap accomodation, about 15 degrees, excelent food, and everything that a big city has to offer.
