general transportation questions while in lisbon

by 9tigers

1) if I purchase round trip do I have to tell them the specify time I want to leave or coming back?

2) If I can get 6.5 10 pack zone one tickets from airport or any metro stops? will the metro automatic machine has english menu?

3) How to get bus ticket like a pack as well

4)Also tram and bus are not covered in the same ticket?

5)If I get a bus ticket is that useful for transfer all day? If so do I need to ask driving for a receipt to show other drivers..

6) Also is there discount for 65+ just for EU or everyone, someone told me it is just for EU

Re: general transportation questions while in lisbon

by cubsur

I am not sure I understand the questions entirely but here is my attempted answer!

1. On local and regional trains, metro, trams and buses, no you do not. On long distance (intercity) trains and buses all seats are reserved, so if you reserve a round trip you must choose the date and time of the return journey. However, if you are not sure when you wish to come back, you can make two separate ticket purchases but there is a slight risk that, if you wait until the final moment, the bus or train might be full. In that case you would be sold a ticket for the next bus or train with seats available, which might be tomorrow!

2. The Metro ticket machines have English menus but they are complicated so make sure you press the right buttons.

3. I am not sure but there is a 3,70 one day pass that includes all buses, trams and metro in the city centre zone.

4. There are several options - I recommend you check the website www.carris.pt (which has information in English) about the different tickets and passes.

5. All the buses have automatic ticket readers. You touch your ticket or pass at the reader at the entrance to the bus. It shows a green light if your ticket is valid, a red light if it not.

6. I don't know but you have to show ID (eg passport) to get the discount so I think you should ask at an information desk before buying your first ticket.

I hope that helps and I await further information on the subject myself. Next trip to Lisbon in April!

Travel Tips for Lisbon

patriotism

by arasnosliw

I've come to realize that the Portuguese are very proud of their country. Many people criticize Americans for being very patriotic, but I feel as if it is even more so here. Sure, the 2004 EURO (hosted in Portugal) certainly tied the country together and gave them a sense of unity. Still, they know they are proud even if they don't want to admit it, and I respect them for that.

Chiado

by bambino36

After the fire of 1988 that started in Armazéns do Chiado the neighborhood was rebuilt, regaining it's elegance and charm. Here can be found several old style cafes where, in the beginning of the 20th century, many writers, artists and intellectuals use to go.
Rua Garrett and Rua do Carmo were always famous for having the best stores, especially shoe stores... and also beautiful women walking on them :)
The Armazéns do Chiado is today a shopping center with many stores inside. Having a coffee in A Brasileira on a sunny day

Belèm.

by Maurizioago

Belèm is a district of Lisbon. It is located six kilometers from the city center.

One of its main attractions is the Jeronimos Monastery (1502-1551); a huge white building with a magnificient carved portal and a big two-storeys cloister. Not far from the monastery there is the Discovery monument (see tip). After quite a long walk you arrive to the Tower of Belèm. It was built between 1515 and 1520. This is the only monument built completely in Manueline style in Lisbon.

Belèm is located alongside the river Tagus. You can go there by tram n. 15 from Commerce Square.

The Rough Guide to Lisbon

by HORSCHECK

I usually borrow guide books from a library for my travels, but sometimes I feel like I have to buy a guide book just to make my bookshelf look well travelled. As I was really looking forward to finally visiting Lisbon, I decided to buy the "Rough Guide to Lisbon". Rough Guides are my prefered travel book series.
I read quite a lot in this book before, during and after the trip. The book offers a gorgeous mixture of sight seeing descriptions, lively reviews of all sorts of places and interesting background stories. Apart from that it includes useful maps.
Highly recommended, especially for independent travellers!
