Another great Lisbon Square is Praca da Figueira. It is located right by Rossio, but retains more of an old world feel.

Although it is a bit of a transport hub, it was less hectic than Rossio and surrounded by some interesting shops and buildings.

There is a statue of Dom Joao I astride his horse, which seems to be quite a popular place for the local pigeons to meet up.

One shop here is the Confeitaria Nacional which dates back to 1829. It will tempt you in by its tasty window displays and wide range if culinary delights.

Praca da Figueira is home to the Rossio metro station and also one point to catch the number 15 tram to Belem.

Lisbon is well served by buses.

You can buy a ticket valid for the whole day; for three, four or seven days. These kind of tickets are on sale behind the S. Justa Elevator or at a booth in Praca da Figueira.

This is just a photo of a Smart Car that was being given as a prize in Praca da Figueira. Pretty sporty for an econo-car, huh?

Pav looks pretty interested in this one, but we stuck with our trust Fiat Punto when we rented a car.

The Lonely Planet guide book give this pensao a very good review but I have not been able to find anything else on the web about it.

Have any of you stayed there? How was your experience there? Is it very noisy?

No, never, but...

Praca Figueira has many pensions. It is in the centre of Lisbon. It is the square next to Rossio.

$ 1,000,000 view!!! It's in the main center of the city. You have a most wonderful view, nice stuff, 24 hours reception, video cameras in the corridor. It's allways clean (rooms maid are cleaning your room everyday and changes towels).
Few more things:
- Luggage storage.

- Internet access.
- Telephone/Fax Facilities.
- Laundry service.

fantastic budget place in an ideal location.

Pensao Praca da Figueira is mabye the best budget option in Lisbon if you are looking for a cheap single room.
The place is located next to a square with the same name as the pensao which is smack in the center of lisbon and they have various rooms where the prices vary a bit, but it is generally very cheap for Lisbon standard.
I paid 22 euros for my room and it was a totally ok budget room with bathroom in the corridor and even a view over the square.
The reception staff was very friendly and the lady there went out of her way to help me when i cut my finger and she kept asking me for the rest of my stay if i needed more help.
I will surely return to this wonderful place.

Best place, best price

In low season it's only 12.50 euros per person (option #3)!!! This option is better than other two, because you live on the other floor as the reception - is more quiet, more privacy and you feel that you're alone there... Oh, and you'll have a BALCONY!!! There're 4 bathrooms and you'll always find a free one. TV is in the hall, but if watching TV is your purpose of visiting Lisbon... Anyway they have only 4 channels and all of them are in portuguese ;))) In option #2 (25 euros) you have your own shower and TV, but it's occupying the whole room and you have no place for yourself. No balcony!!! About option #1 find yourself ;))))
