Where/when to buy train tickets Lisbon to Evora

by vickybob

I am planning to take the train from Lisbon (Entrecampos) to Evora in October, roundtrip. Can I safely reserve and buy them when I get to Portugal or must I buy on the web from over here (USA). Don't know if they fill up, and I know you must reserve for the IC trains. Thank you for your help!

I am answering this from a distance, but I found that the cp.pt website referred to an interrail website that said for IC trains in Portugal:
"Compulsory reservation (can only be made locally)
2nd class: € 4/ 1st class: € 4"
see http://www.interrailnet.com/interrail-special-trains

This seems a bit odd to me, but it's Portugal, and I haven't ridden a train there in decades. Usually in Europe (knock on wood), taking care of the ticket and reservation in Europe is fine, unless you have a particular train in a particular class or amenity that you MUST have on a certain date...this is because there are typically so many trains in Europe that most are not full (except at holiday time)...

Let's see what the others say...

I am a resident of Portugal and a regular train traveller.

Most people take the bus from Lisbon to Evora as they are more frequent, quicker and often cheaper than the train, although in my opinion a lot less comfortable! The trains to and from Evora rarely fill up, but they are short trains, only 3 or 4 cars, so for travel at holiday times and on Friday/Sunday afternoons reserving a seat early is probably a good idea.

There are only three daily round trips between Lisbon and Evora so your choice is somewhat limited.

For this route, you should not have a problem buying your tickets locally, even on the day of travel. On some other routes eg Lisbon to Porto, trains are routinely very busy and advance reservation is always advised.

Seat reservation is required on all IC trains in Portugal. If the train is fully booked, the on-line system will not allow a ticket purchase. Your tickets are thus good only for the date and time of the journey selected but if your plans change or you miss a train they can be revalidated.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for your info..based on it I got my outbound train tickets on the web here because I was travelling on a Friday afternoon and it worked out perfectly as train was rather crowded. Returning on a Monday afternoon, did not really need them in advance so got them there and it was fine. The trains were great and the train web is great...no problems...accurate exchange rate and no hidden costs... same cost getting them here and there. Yay Portugal!

Just FYI...the info you are referring to was for a Portugal rail pass (i.e. "advance seating locally" etc.) For regular point to point tickets the CP web for train tickets is simple, correct, and gives you a seat assignment. Portugal has great internet infrastructure for tourism!

Travel Tips for Lisbon

Lisbon is a city with...

by silvia-m.b

Lisbon is a city with approximately 700.000 inhabitants. If you count the surroundings about 1.000.000 people! Not too bad... Lisbon had a terrible earthquake in the year 1755 which the 1st November at 9.30 destroyed more than 20 churches, died more than 15.000 people, and there was a terrible big fire around 7 long days... was a terrible tragedy!!! :-( When I'm away Lisbon I miss its wonderful buildings with a 'sausade' atmosphere! I love it!
This picture was taken in my last trip. Have you seen this beautiful sunny day??? Was a hot day to explore Lisbon!

Nice street scenes

by mabu

Lissabon is a great place to stroll along the streets. The town has got so much different streets, the shopping streets, places where rich and not so rich people live. I never felt unsafe but probably i wouldn't go anywhere in the dark on my own.

Look down!

by santax

As you walk around Lisbon pay attention to the beautiful patterned pavements made of cobblestones.
On this picture is one of the most famous pavements in the city. It's below the Discoveries Monument (the picture was taken from the top of the monument), and shows a map of the world with the routes of the Portuguese explorers and the lands they discovered.

Santo Antonio

by porteda

If you happen to come to Lisbon in June, you might see some streets decorated with small flags and balloons. From the 12th June evening up to the next day (St. Antony's day - he was born in Lisbon) people party in the streets. There is a parade in the evening of the 12th in Avenida da Liberdade (from Marques do Pombal down to Restauradores). In the 'bairros' many people grill sardines in the street and drink wine. They probably don't mind if you join them!

Good bye Stadium 1

by johnsakura

this stadium will be gone a few months from now. They are building a new one as you can see just beside. the old one was for 70 thousand people. but for the EURO2004 they had to build a new one. hurry up to visit this last times of the old stadium.
