Sintra is Located HERE

Only about 30 kilometres west of Lisbon, and very close to the western Atlantic coast, Sintra makes for a very enjoyable day-trip from Lisbon! You can either do some walking around the town and its surrounding mountains or maybe get transportation of some sort to explore some of the other interesting attractions in the nearby area. As recounted in my pages, we actually made two trips here because we enjoyed the first one so much! Our first visit was by train from Lisbon, so we just walked around the main attractions of Sintra. However, after completing our 2-week rental car drive around Portugal, we returned here for a look at the surrounding area ('Distrito de Lisboa' page) before dropping our car off in Lisbon. The bottom line is - GO TO SINTRA !
Pena Park

Fernando II whose origins where German wanted to make a park in which he would combine plants of his homeland with exotic plants. The place its self has its own microclimate and he succeded in his plan. We were told this is the only park in the world where something like that is achieved.
Interesting to see.........even the kids liked it!

So much to do and see in this town. The National Palace of Sintra is well worth a visit. Well restored, the Coat of Arms room will take your breath away! Amazing hand painted tiles everywhere and you can look up the huge white chimneys that dominate the town views. You can get tours, we didn't and enjoyed going round at our own pace. Most languages seemed to be catered for in the tours. Then, afterwards, you can come out and go to any of the many cafes and restaurants near by. The beautiful buildings, the striking hand painted tiles, the hospitality of the people and the views.
Fountain water

I decided to walk up the steep hill to the Moorish Castle and walked past the Sabuga Fountain and noticed a couple of people filling up large water bottles and placing them in a van. I’m sure it was for their own consumption and that they weren’t selling it on to the general public! There’s a local saying that says “anyone who drinks Sabuga water will never forget Sintra”. They sure didn’t forget about this fountain!
