Portugal next December

by delnero80

Hi-
We are planning a trip to Portugal in December for about a week. I have been there beforem, but only to Lisbon and the Algarve; however, the people coming with me this time have never been. I definitely would like to go to Porto this time and explore the north, but I am up for anything. The goal of our short trip is to see some of the country, maybe 2-3 places, or day trips. To eat and go out at night and have fun. please let me know your suggested itineraries.

Thanks!

We were in Lisbon and Porto in late May / early June. Water was freakin cold, but we hired a driver and van and did a wine/port tasting tour of the Duoro Valley.... Most excellent. Pretty country, friendly people, good food and great wine. Karl

One nice day trip is to nearby beach resort Cascais with its scenic harbor, fish market and numerous great seafood restaurants. I recommend Cherne, a wonderful firm-white fleshed fish otherwise known as Atlantic turbot. Late night bars with Fado music and dancing are also treats not to be missed. Cascais is about 18 miles by electric rail along the Tagus river from Lisbon's Cais do Sodre station. The Boca do Inferno blowhole is active in winter just past the harbor but be cautious with your footing here. The westernmost point in Europe is nearby Cabo da Roca on the ocean. A great art museum in a castle and city park just west of the harbor is also worth a visit in Cascais. On the way approaching Cascais the rail passes by the gambling mecca of nearby Estoril with its casino and some oceanfront old castle-like structures, now deluxe accomodations.

You can visit Coimbra on your way to Porto, and, if you have time, there are some beautiful places near porto such as Vila Real, Braga, Guimaraes, Viana do Castelo...

Bring your rainwear! December is the wettest month of the year and this year it is doing it's best to break the record, especially in the north.

May I add Valenca do Minho to a list of possible places. Right up in the very north on the border with Spain, it is an authentic Portuguese town with an impressive set of military fortifications and views of the river Minho. Go on Wednesday morning if you can, when the local outdoor market is held.

Valenca is 3 hours by train or bus from Porto, maybe 2 hours by car. The train runs partly along the coast so there are good sea and river scenes. The road runs inland and I don't know the scenery going that way.
