Travel Tips for Santarém

Flooding

by solopes

Flooding of river Tejo is common, even desired by the population for what it means in fertility. Everybody is used to it, and the calm shown while they take the needed measures to protect their belongings is remarkable. Some incidents may occur, but in Santarém area they are uncommon.

"Forcados"

by solopes

In Portugal we use to say that "one image speaks more than 1000 words". Having that in mind, and more than 1000 pictures to post, I decided to change my behaviour, posting the pictures as soon as they are ready, and adding the comments later.
Don't get mad on me - I'm glad to share my pictures with you, and the comments will be added soon.

Santarem

"the city"

Historical centre is very nice to walk about with its remodeled buildings, heritage sites, churches and reminisciences from Romans, Arabs, Jews, discoverers, kings and the fables.
The best being that it houses the second largest miracle in the world: the Miracle of the Bleeding Ostia.
Conventual dessert best known as Celeste to be bought at the local pastisserie.
Go to the Convent, eat the pastries, walk the streets and visit the churches.

Santarem - The gothic city in a rainy day

by salinhopt

The foundation of the city of Santarém walks on to greco-roman and Christian mythology, recognizing two mythical origins in its génese: in the first case associated with a classic hero of Habis name, gift in the mythology of Tartessos and as in case that to mártir Irene Saint, of very probable peninsular ancestry. The first registered vestiges of the occupation of Santarém retraces to century VIII before christ.
