Distrito Setúbal
by micas_pt
This district is adjacent to Lisbon and yet it looks so far away – customs are different, landscapes are different, …. Its capital – Setúbal – is a city where you should eat fresh grilled fish and seafood: both are delicious. A few km away from the city, there’s a fabulous mountain overlooking the sea and the peninsula of Troia – Serra da Arrábida. And if you cross the river from Setúbal to Troia (by ferry) then you will come across some amazing almost deserted beaches (such as Comporta area). This fabulous coast goes all the way to Sines – a port city. You may visit Roman Ruins, both in Troia and Sines region.

wander around Alcacer do Sal reveals the most charming aspects of the city, with its alleys and stairways leading up to the castle. Take the opportunity to look in on some of the main points of interest here: church of sta maria do castelo, church of santiago and archeology museum. In the vicinity, and all within a range of 30 km, do not miss out on the chance to see the villages of Santa Susana, Porto de Rei and Torrao or the Vale do Gaio dam. Should you prefer the coastline, there are some quality beaches to be had at Comporta, Torre, Carvalhal, Raposa or Gale.

Portugal, a country in love with the Atlantic
by acoelho
"Porto, the city where I was born"
The second city in the country, 900 years old.
The walk along the river Douro on the north bank is something to remember for ever.
Stop to drink a coffee and harm up your body in a tradicional coffee shop in a misty sunday morning. Your eyes will be lost when the river meets the Atlantic and the salty taste of the ocean sets your mind to sail, like Portuguese did in the XV century.
"Gerês, the jewel of the crown"
The only Portuguese National Park is one of the best places to be.
Mountains, rivers, endemic forests, little villages (still) lost at the very end of a beaten road.
Great food in can be found in this area of the country. Stop at any small restaurant and check the "cabrito assado", the "rojões à Minhota" or ... well just close your eyes and point at one line and give it a try! don't forget the wine... oh yes Lord, the green sparkling wine or the green red wine that colors the cups with it's blood like appearance...
"Azeitão, Arrabida, Troia"
30 km south of Lisbon you will find the Arrabida mountain range, a clear landscape feature after crossing the flat plains of river Tejo. Just before entering the mountain you'll have to cross Azeitão. This small village is full of unique details like it's wine, local cakes, hand painted tiles and old palaces.
Then take the road to the mountain and surprise yourself with the dazzling views from the mountain rim into the ocean 300 meters below.
Look again now... and you will see the long narrow strip of land that seems to raise from the waters and continues south until it disapears in horizont. This is the peninsula of Troia. Take the ferry in Setubal and get lost in the white sand beach that never ends, feel the rounded pine trees aroma and eat the exceptional grilled fish in the beach restaurant at Comporta.
Believe me, you will come back for more!
