    A stay in historical ambiente

    by

Pousadas are portuguese hotels in historical buildings set up to keep the charm of the past with modern amenities. With the high standard they are not very cheap, but at least one night should be spent in one during your trip. During my trip I was thinking where to spent my time in a Pousada and decided that in Alcaer do Sal would be the right time. The Pousada is located in a castle located high up over the town on a hill that has traces of a 5000 years of history. Inside the hotel there is much space to find a quiet corner. The food in the restaurant is delicious.

Unique Quality: Much of the interior reminds of the old castle, the thick walls and wide corridors. Below the Pousada there is a nice museum (different entrance) showing the archeological findings in and around the building.
The hill on which the Pousada is located offers very nice views over the town, the river Sado and the rice fields.

Directions: Castelo de Alcácer do Sal, above town.

Travel Tips for Alcácer do Sal

Resident storks of Alcacer do Sal

by berenices

One of the more interesting sights to see in the countryside around Alcacer do Sal is the proliferation of storks (cegonha in Portuguese), and the eventual stork nests atop any tall structure, including the electrical line posts along the road. I have heard that storks very much have come to stay, some of them even here all year round, so that they are now resident storks. To see them, avoid the highway, and take the IC1. Most of these birds are seen around the vicinity of the rice fields approaching Alcacer. And when you're lucky, you might even see the couple with their chicks all on their happy, not so little nest. I've passed that road in different seasons, and notice there are more during summer, where almost every nest is occupied.

The town that salt built

by berenices

"Little jewel of the Sado River"

Alcaçer do Sal is a small but stunning historical town of castles and convents, medieval cobbled streets, whitewashed houses and large flat chimneys hugging a low hill on the banks of the quiet waters of the Sado River. Located in the district of Setubal, about an hour's drive from Lisbon, the town derives its name from "al qasr", Moorish for "the castle", and sal refers to the salt for which this area is known for since ancient times.

There is plenty to explore here...not just the historical monuments, but nature as well. The banks of the river, the marshes, the rice paddies all around, and the little olive groves are haven for plenty of birds. Climb up the castle and enjoy a 360 degree view of the beautiful countryside, and cross the two walking bridges to the other side of the bank to have a fantastic postcard view of the little town.

A trip to this town would be an ideal visit for those who wish to see "medieval Portugal" outside Lisbon but who do not wish to travel too far from the capital.
