Viana do Castelo from Porto - transportation and safety
by nomad7890
A second place I would like to visit from Porto is Viana do Castelo. Is this a place ok for a woman traveling alone to visit?
Easy transportation from Porto?
Once in the city, is it walkable?

I don't know specifically about Viana do Castelo but Portugal is generally safe for a woman travelling alone provided you take basic precautions.
Viana do Castelo is easily accessible by train from Porto's Campanha station. Journey times vary from 1hr 30 min to about 2 hours. one way fare is €4.75. A change of train is sometimes required at Nine.

There are also regular buses ( I have seen them) but you will need to ask as more than one company provides service. Buses are in some cases quicker than the train if time is a factor.

Hi there,
Viana do Castelo is definately walkable. I go there every 2 years so I should know! The best way to get there from Porto is by bus. Takes about 1.5hrs and stops only a few times. There is no direct train from Porto station, so it's a bit of a hassle changing at different stations.
It is a much smaller and quiter city than Porto, but equally as beautiful. I am a woman and I never felt unsafe, even at night.
I hope that helps!

Hi Roni - thanks for the note, I will keep it in mind for the next trip - I've been back home for a couple of months now.
Travel Tips for Viana do Castelo
The Vianese costume
by ncfg
It is at the feasts, fairs and festivals in the region of Minho that the Minhotan, particularly the woman, wears her best clothes. The Vianese costume is only worn on these or other special occasions, namely at exhibitions of a folklore nature. The gracious feminine costumes are incomparably colourful, whether they come from the coastal area or from the beautiful Lima valley.
Metal Bridge over the river Lima
by ncfg
It is a very fine example of 19th century iron architecture, designed by Gustave Eifel. From this bridge, there are fabulous panoramic views from various angles of the city of Viana, the mount of Santa Luzia, the river Lima and its mouth.
It means "Ana of the Castle" in theory...

"Beautiful coastal city without tourists!"
Okay, my wife hails from there so I'm biased. But, give it a try. The town has a beautiful river (the Lima), the only commercial shipyard in Portugal, some nice beaches, a lively but definitely hometown shopping district, and the neatest chapel and hotel on the top of the hill, overlooking the city, river and ocean.
More later.
