Lizard
Actually, this lizard was almost ON the beaten path because we came across it sunning itself on the rocks beside the stairway as we descended to Lamego. This is almost a macro photo, because the lizard was quite small, less than 6 inches in length. I don't know my lizards very well, but this was probably one of the types of Wall Lizard that are common to various parts of Europe.
It reminded us of all the geckos and lizards that we used to see when living in Zambia and Papua New Guinea.
