Azulejos - Ceramic Tiles
Wherever you go in Portugal, you cannot avoid seeing, and being impressed by, displays made up of hand-painted ceramic tiles. This custom of decorating buildings and other structures with these 'azulejos' has been with the Portugese for over 1000 years, the result of their introduction by Moorish conquerers over the period from about 700 - 1200 AD.
Several of the nine terraces on the stairway leading up to Nossa Senhora dos Remedios are adorned with a scene similar to this one. Considering that the stairs were completed in 1761, the tiles are still in remarkably good shape, except for the odd tile that vandals have been at (some visible here closer to foot level).
