Staff speak English - i was able to phone and check that they were open - as i was travelling in off peak season and not so many people around and some of the hostels were closed -
(or particularly Penhas de Saude - the guy had answered that no problem to stay and when i got there there was a sign on the door that the whole period from one week before i arrived and the week after the hostel was closed, leaving me to resort to 30 euro accommodation - which was lovely and worth the cost though.)
and he had told me i could have a room to myself for low price.
Unique Quality: When i got there it was a fairly big place near to the municipal stadium and grounds so it was quiet without being desolate. and i was told my room was 7 euro! 9 euro if i hadnt have been a member, no breakfast but only 7 euro! helps make up for the expensive places i stayed at along the trip. and i had the whole room to myself - which he conveniently gave me one next to the bathroom. and i had a real bed ie not a bunk - and real sheets and blankets!
It was a 5 bedded room and i guess in peak season would be paying 7 euro to have a bunk sharing with 4 others.
Directions: near the municipal stadium - follow the signs apparently! i couldnt find any and ended up being guided by 2 police officers in their patrol car!
Hotel Onix is a very good hotel outside the center of Viseu. It is great for families. There is a swimming pool, a bar and a pool tabel. The service is very good, and the people who work there are veru friendly. Highly recommended.
