Nice Hostel

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on February 25, 2009

Located in a central position close to the shopping street of Santa Catarina it is a perfect place to stay with just four dorm rooms from 6 to 10 beds each.

Rooms are big, spacious and have ensuite bathrooms. There are lockers, individual lights in each bed, a shelf to put some belongings and an individual plug. Everything was clean and the shower had a very nice pressure. In the lobby there is free internet and wireless, comfortable couch and pillows to watch TV. There is a nice kitchen with space to put your stuff separated by rooms. The hostel is in an old house recovered and with a modern and nice decoration while keeping some of the old character.

Breakfast is served in the lobby and hours are flexible at least while I was there. The breakfast is ok and staff is nice. They give you sheets, a duvet, pillow, pillow case and towel. There was also a towel in the bathroom to clean your hands and soap.

Outside there is a nice terrace that will surely be nice in summer.

I didn’t like two things. First the dorm door did a lot of noise to close, the second thing that the room had no shutters to avoid an excess of light. If you have a lot of luggage be aware that there are some stairs to climb.

I went there in February and the place was a bit dead but I’m sure in summer it will be a fun place to be.

Unique Quality: Huge rooms, ensuite bathrooms, nice staff, free internet, large terrace, attention to details.

Directions: Exit in Bolhão subway. Go up Rua de Santa Catarina and turn in the second street to the right. It is after the Via Catarina Mall and the church with the tiles.

Andarilho Oporto Hostel

Bad (2.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on August 3, 2008

One word : mosquitoes. They were everywhere in the common room. It is also up quite a steep hill - although most places in Oporto, due to geography, are. However, the hostel did have all the facilities you would expect : kitchen, common room, free internet, clean bathrooms etc.
