Hotel (and other) recommendations for Oporto

by robine

I shall be taking a 3-night break in Oporto in early May. I've done the basic research (and, indeed, been there briefly before), but personal recommendations are always best. Could anyone recommend a good, central, mid-range (around 80 euros) hotel? The Ipanema looks to fit the bill: does anyone know it? And any other suggestions for eating, drinking and sight-seeing?

Many thanks/ muito obrigado, Robin

The Ipanema is fully booked, as are a number of other hotels in this price range. Is there something (a fair?) going on at the time?

Go up the tower of Clerigos.

Visit the Church of San Francisco. It is full of golden works.

Eat at La Ribera (the shore). There are many restaurants very near the river.

Check out:

Mercure Batalha
Praca Da Batalha, 116
4000 Porto
Portugal

Very central hotel by the theatre and not far from the river and all the bridges and port lodges.

I'll be going to Oporto next month and am staying at the Best Western Inca, got a good deal on it to.

Mercure is from accor hotels group... you have also IBIS and NOVOHOTEL some are in Gaia, the other side of the river.
go to www.accor.com
search for hotels in Porto and you'll have a list... with map and info... you can book online (i've done it before to Madrid IBIS worked great).
Mercure Batalha is there too.
have luck

When visiting Porto i used to stay in:
- Hotel Douro (Boavista area). This hotel used to be nice. Some people don't like it because some rooms overlook the cemetery, .... Check their website: www.hoteldouro.pt
- Hotel Boa Vista (Foz area). It has a nice location concerning views, but probably not good for public transportation, .... i'm not sure as i always take car. Rooms are ok and so is service. Their website is: www.hotelboavista.com

For restaurants Ribeira neighbourhood has a wide choice.

Hope you enjoy Porto.

I've now booked into the Mercure Batalha, through the Accor website, at a very good discount. Thank you all very much, again!

Travel Tips for Porto

Visit the portchambers. We...

by hermen

Visit the portchambers. We were at Offley's and at Taylers'. Offley was a nice lady and we almost got a personal tour. The price at Offley's is only 500 escudo's. It's about 2 euro's. Taylers' entrance was free and the tour was more professional so if you only visit one, I suggest that you visit Taylers' My fondest memory was the skyline of the Douro (the river down Porto)at night! All the lights at the other side of the Douro with the famous Port-labels as neon!! Pretty nice!

Porto wine caves

by micas_pt

While visiting Porto you should not miss the chance to taste Porto wine (sweet wine). Best way to do it is to cross Douro to the other side and in Vila Nova de Gaia you will find all major makes. They all allow (paid) visit to their caves and some wine tasting. I'm sure you won't regret doing this because that sweet wine is very good. If you are talking a walk along the river near Ribeira neighbourhood and look at the other side you will notice some big houses by the river with names written - those are some of the Porto wine caves.

Don't speak Spanish!

by Nexus7

I speak fairly fluent Spanish and I thought since Spanish is the closest language to Portugues that it would be a welcome form of communication instead of being ignorant and speaking english. I knew some basic phrases in Portugues, but I noticed on multiple ocassions that the locals did not appreciate me speaking Spanish and said that I should speak just speak English if I didn't know Portugues. I think they feel kind of cramped. I think they thought that we were unaware that they spoke Portugues there. At any rate, I would suggest not speaking Spanish in the tourist areas, because they all know English fairly well. When people don't know English for certain, go ahead and speak Spanish just to be able to communicate and I think they won't mind then....

Once approved, the wines to be sold as VINTAGE must be bottled in BLACK GLASS BOTTLES. This specific is mandatory according to the government's law.
