The Meridien Park Atlantic is a very nice hotel, with all the comforts that you would expect for 5 stars. Most of Porto's hotels are not in the city centre but this location was ideal because although there's nothing of interest in the immediate area, and the city centre is a 45-minute walk away, buses stop right outside the hotel and they are cheap and very frequent. You can also catch a bus in the other direction to the beach at Foz.

The standard rooms are very comfortable, spacious and tastefully decorated. I'd booked a single but got a king-size bed (with loads of pillows) which was lovely. There was a useful desk and chair, two comfortable chairs in a sitting area, and lamps and wall-lights provided a relaxing atmosphere.

The bathroom was equally luxurious with designer fittings, a good range of toiletries, and a bathtub over which was a gorgeous rain shower.

There were no coffee/tea facilities in the room but I ordered a coffee from room service and it came beautifully presented - a pot of coffee with a plate of scrummy biscuits.

If you want to use the Internet in your room, you'll need an Ethernet card and the price when I stayed there was too high - ,98€ for the first minute and ,48€ per minute after that. However, when I complained about it on checking out, I was told that WiFi is available in the lounge, so maybe that was more reasonable. There was a handy safe in the room which was large enough to house my small laptop.

The hotel also has a restaurant but it's very expensive and my meal was mediocre. I was the only person in there so perhaps things are better on a busier night. However, the large and comfortable bar area serves light meals and these were more reasonably priced and much nicer.

I got an amazing package deal through Expedia but the rates look generally reasonable for the class of property if booking direct with the hotel.

Luxurious accommodation, good service and great transport links.
