Pestana Porto Hotel
Praca da Ribeira 1, Porto, Northern Portugal, 4050-513, Portugal
Jewel of a hotel
I have now stayed at the Pestana Porto several times and each time I just adore it. If you are feeling posh, there is simply no where else to stay in Porto! This is one of the most charming - if not the most charming - hotels in Porto. Rooms on the river are simply to die for- the view is fabulous. The staff are very helpful and ready to meet any of your needs. Decor is contemporary/modern in the best (modern) Portuguese tradition but the architecture is pure traditional old Portugal- the hotel is actually part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. Breakfast is more than satisfactory and the bar is lovely. The hotel is right on the Ribeira- lots of restaurants and bars in walking distance. Not to mention you can walk across the river via the Ponte D. Luís I, to Vila Nova de Gaia and visit the port caves. Walk up from the hotel into the charming, old, working-class neighborhood that is old Porto (or you can take the 'elevador' up and then walk down. The Pestana is a small hotel and has often been booked full when I wanted to stay there, so book early!
Unique Quality: Fabulous views. Staff is wonderful.
Directions: on the Ribeira, Old City
The Porto Carlton is a very nice hotel, in a great area. It's right in Pra?a da Ribeira, which is right on the river bank. There are restaurants, bars, and shopping wll within walking distance. The hotel is housed in a landmark building that has been renovated. the rooms are more modern, than anything, so if you aren't looking for something charming and romantic, this is quite nice. It's not a b & b, which is what I prefer, but this was still a nice experience.

Pestana Porto Carlton Hotel ****
Single 11000 PTE or £33
Twin 19000 PTE or £57 Situated on the Ribeira, (world heritage site), on the banks of the river Douro. All the public areas and rooms are furnished to a high standard and some of the superior rooms are quite exceptional. This is a new hotel with 48 rooms and 3 suites, (the majority face the river).
I visited this hotel on a 1 night stopover after a weeks holiday in the Duoro area.
The Pestana Porto hotel is a cleverly "constructed" building made out of a number of old houses joined together. It is situated on the Praca de Ribeira, a lively square of cafes and restaurants on the riverside.
We were greeted warmly by the hotel staff and although arriving early (10:20am) we were checked in and our bags stored until the room was ready. The room itself was spacious and decorated in neutral tones, with floor to ceiling french windows adding to the sense of space. The windows opened to a small terrace running the full width of the room and giving a great view to the river and the port warehouses on the opposite bank. Beds themselves were comfortable, with huge pillows!
The bathroom was well appointed, decorated in marble, again giving a cool feel, and a further french window with a view towards the square!
Staff at the hotel were efficient, polite and friendly at all times, and all spoke good English. The buffet breakfast (included in the rate) comprised "standard" continental, bacon/egg/sausage, muesli and cereals and fresh fruit and was well organised and unhurried.
There are a variety of restaurants in the immediate area but we didn't notice any excess noise at night. Because of the hotel's location I wouldn't recommend attempting to get there by hire car - the steep and windy roads in the old town wouldn't be relaxing, and a taxi from the airport costs around €22-€25 for the 20 minute journey. However I do recommend booking a room with river view - well worth the extra money.
A great location as a base for "pottering" around the lovely city of Porto
First Rate room and service
A stunning waterfront location.
After reading reviews here I asked to be upgraded to a river view room but the hotel was full. We need not have been concerned - the room was huge as was the bathroom.
We were met with a welcome drink which was a nice touch.
About 20 euros and 30 minutes by taxi from the airport in the rush hour.
Superb breakfast included, although staff struggled to keep up with the croissant thieves when the hotel was full. A suggested improvement would be coffee amking facilities in the room. Some mornings we would happily have foregone breakfast if we had a kettle and some Nescafe available in the room.
VERY good service from friendly staff.
A downside was a few pretentious Brit guests (although happily they were much in the minority) who don't appear to know how to treat staff as human beings.
The hotel bar is typically dull, uninteresting and expensive. However, just outside is a row of bars and restaurants which are open till late, are inexpensive and fun, largely frequented by friendly, helpful locals.
There are beggars plying their trade along the waterfront, but they all appear to be 'regulars', well known to the staff at the cafes who do their best to keep them away from customers. Completely unthreatening however and they do take No for an answer fairly quickly.
This was our first break without children in tow for over 20 years and proved to be an excellent choice.
Porto is a great city to visit. If you want to explore, jump on any bus and buy a 1 day or 3 day Euro Ticket (4 euros or 9 euros respectively). This covers you for all buses, the lovely old trams, the super clean and efficient metro and the Guindais Funicular (not to be missed).
We'll be back!
River View A Must!
Although this hotel is not of the same standard as the Pestana Palace in Lisbon, our River Front rooms were of a nice size, with comfortable bathrooms and a GREAT view of the river and the Port Houses. Phenomenal restaurant down the street. Walk across the bridge to the Port Houses for tastings. The staff is friendly, the hotel is clean, although simple. The decor is a bit bland and the public spaces are utilitarian. River Front room with large wraparound balcony is a MUST. Buffet breakfast included is tasty with a large selection. More reasonable rates found at Pestana web site.
Great Hotel in lively location
This was a great find for an over night in Porto. Room was very clean although a little small, bathroom was a good size with a balcony as well as a balcony in the room, but we got a cheaper price thru a website called Gtahotels.com than I could find anywhere else. I was a little worried about the noise as the hotel is above a small square where there are loads of bars and restuarants but the double glazing was excellent and we did not hear a thing. The staff were really friendly and helpful. We had breakfast delivered to our room as it was my birthday and we had a lovely selection of pastries, bread, jam, ham and cheese and some fresh orange juice. The location was brilliant, although it took us ages to find our way to the river in our hire car. We arrived about 9.30 in the evening but the area was so lively that there were loads of places still serving food. Across the river are all the Port houses and also river cruises, some of them do deals with the Port houses that you get a free tour and tasting at a Port house if you go on a cruise.
Great hotel, great location...
We visited Porto at the end of a memorable holiday travelling in North Portugal (dump the car before you get to Porto - you won't need it). We fell in love with the City and the Pestana - the location is superb and a few extra euros for a river view is well worth it. The staff are friendly and super-efficient and the hotel is comfortable. We will definitely stay here again if we return to Porto.
Very pleased with this hotel!
The Pestana is a charming little hotel in Porto's Ribeira district that is also designated a World Heritage Site. We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights in August. The hotel's English language website was easy to use to make the reservation and I received a confirmation via email. Check-in went smoothly. We reserved a "city view" room as in all honesty we don't really spend much time in hotels, basically just to shower and sleep. The room was surprisingly large, by European standards, was airy, clean, and pleasantly decorated. We did not hear any noise from the cafe tables below us. There was plenty of closet, drawer, and shelf space. The bathroom was quite large as well, and the shower had excellent water pressure, almost like home. The best part was the enormous down pillows and duvet on the bed. The bed was very comfortable and I had trouble motivating myself to get up in the morning. The included breakfast buffet was what you'd normally expect - fruit, cheese, a variety of breads and pastries, and some meats. The Pestana added some nice touches like a few stems of fresh flowers in the bathroom each day and the next day's weather report slipped under your door each evening. Staff were pleasant and helpful. I would definitely stay at this hotel if I ever return to Porto.
hotel choices in Ribiera area
Other than the Pestana Porto Hotel, which seems a bit pricey, can anyone recommend a hotel in that area that is nice, with river views, boutique, that is somewhat less than the Pestana? TIA, Karl
