is it worth it to visit porto and stay overnight?

by 9tigers

I am planning to walk cross the bridge and visit winery on foot is that doable?
will there be enough of free tours for free sample of wines?
do I really need to take the boat tour? it seems to be expensive.

if I have to go up to the hills for wineries is it still doable via foot or is there buses to take?

For the wineries acroos the bridge, you don't need a bus and regarding the visit/tours, ask them first (prices, timetable...)

And I'd recommend you at least one full day to visit the city itself.

If you mean the Ponte Dom Luis I, then yes the wineries of Vila Nova de Gaia are very close together, mostly close to the river and can easily be seen.

I am not quite sure what you mean by 'go up to the hills' but many of the major vineyards and wineries are 50km+ from Porto.

I just read somewhere that not all the winery tastings are free but if u go up to the hill a bit they are mostly free.. but I maybe wrong :)

I would not call them wineries. I think a better word would be porteries, but they call them port houses. We visited 5-6, I don't think we found any free ones, we would share a tasting, 4-5 different types, but after 20 or so tastings all the port started tasting the same. Not that we weren't having a good time. Our favorite was Ramos, because we could clown around a bit. Sandeman's was a bit snooty. If you want to great wine, you need to head up to the Douro Valley. if Porto is all about tasting wines, I wonder if I still want to go all the way there and do it or just go to supermarket and get some while I am in lisbon... I have done a lot of tasting wine and going through wineries for free when I was in CA...

I need some good advice on that. b/c there are just so many other great places to visit that I would not be able to see anywhere else. want to do as much as I can in 2 weeks worth of time

May I ask you, are you interested in wine testing or in Porto itself?

Travel Tips for Porto

Lots of Pubs / Restaurants ...

by Frankinho

Near the Dom Luis I Bridge, there are lots of pubs, winaries and restaurants at both banks of the river Douro. You can sit there and have a great time looking at the bridge and the historic parts of Porto ...

S. Bento railway station

This station is full in decorative tiles (20.000!), illustrating celebrated and historical events and various moments of the railway/transport history of Portugal, painted by Jorge Colaso. This train station was built in the beginning of the 20th century.

Narrow Streets

by MarioPortugal

Many Streets in Porto (Oporto) are quite narrow. Many of these streets are so narrow that it makes impossible for any car to drive through. I found quite interesting this particularity - this is a consequence of Porto's several centuries old heritage.

Manteigaria do Bolhão

Mr Emilio Barros has been managing this business for 52 years now.

Manteigaria do Bolhão (in english: Buttery of Bolhão) is located in the upper level of Mercado do Bolhão (the Bolhão Market) itself.

A wonderful stadium...

by diamond7

The Estadio do Dragao is the new stadium of F C Porto; the inaugural game was in 2003-nov-16. It is really very beautiful and useful, indeed. Now, at this city, is very comfortable to watch football games, not in TV but just in the stadium...
