Hotel do Parque beside the Shrine by Bwana_Brown When we arrived in Lamego, we were completely surprised to find out that the hotel we had booked was located at the very top of the most famous attraction in the city - the twin 686-step granite staircase leading up the hillside to the Shrine of Nossa Senhora dos Remedios! The drive up from the town below winds through the hillside forest of pine, chestnut, oak and mimosa trees that make up the beautiful park surrounding the Shrine.
This whitewashed building contains 39 rooms, 3 suites, a games room, bars and a restaurant as well as it's own private garden. There was no fuss at the reception desk and we were quickly ushered upstairs to what turned out to be the top floor. There did not seem to be too many other guests at this time of the season and I get the feeling that they gave us the best room in the house! As seen in the photo, we had the top corner with our bathroom window looking out over the Shrine and the bedroom window providing a view down the 686 steps to Lamego spread out below! For E65 (US$80), we had hit the jackpot for our two night stay here! Breakfasts in the restaurant were great and they also had a nice informal bar on the ground floor looking out at the Shrine. It was interesting to watch the pilgrims come in for some quick refreshments! Arrival in the Graca Parking Lot by Bwana_Brown The Pensao Graca was nothing like what I expected after phoning there from Canada a couple of months earlier. It seems to be a brand new establishment, and it seemed quite large when we drove up. As it is located just outside Evora itself, it took us some time to actually find it by driving round and round in city traffic. I had tried to locate it before we left on the trip by using one of those internet map programs, but no luck! Our bedroom was very clean, modern and comfortable. It was located on the ground floor at the rear of the Pensao and it had two windows that opened onto a nice view of their walled grounds. These grounds were quite large and contained a number of orange trees that were in full fruit!
Pensao Graca has a very large breakfast room, which came with our price of lodging of E45 (US$55). The only other guests who joined us in the morning were five Portugese men who wore the clothes and boots of labourers of some sort. In retrospect, I notice that this 25 room establishment is classified as a 'boarding house', so these guys were obviously using it as a base for whatever job they were working on. Breakfast was the typical plain buns with jam, also I tried some yoghurt as well as very nice orange juice and the ubiquitous strong Portugese coffee! Granite Manor House - built in 1686 by Bwana_Brown When choosing this accommodation, I picked the Solar de Alarcao so we could have a glimpse of what it would be like to stay in a really old building. Built in 1686, this solid granite manor house, located only step away from the 'Se' (cathedral), did not disappoint! In addition to the house itself, the car park is also surrounded by granite walls and the entrance is controlled by a large and heavy iron-grilled gate that was fun to operate.
This house was of such importance when it was built that it also contains a private chapel (visible on the far left in the photo) with its own bell and separate large doorway. The Solar has only three bedrooms, all with double beds and ensuite bathrooms. An interesting twist on their rate structure was that a room would cost us E80 (US$100) if we used both beds but only E70 if we snuggled up together! Hotel Raina D'Amelia by Bwana_Brown About a month before we left for Portugal, I had tried to book a Residencial in Castelo Branco by phone, but was told that they were already full. After that, I decided to play it safe and simply booked a room at the Best Western, figuring that we may need to pamper ourselves a bit by then. Castelo Branco is a mid-sized city, and we did have some trouble locating the hotel when we finally reached the city after a long day of driving and sightseeing, starting from Evora. However, everything went smoothly once we had checked in!
It was great to have free underground parking because the street in front of the hotel was fairly busy. Also, this was the only accommodation on our trip where we had a mini-bar in the room - I simply had to have a cold SuperBock beer after the long drive north! It was very reasonably priced at E1.30 compared to some of the mini-bar prices that I have seen in North America. In the hallway beside the elevators, we found a shoe-shine device that would apply polish and then give it a good brushing to bring the shine out! We also enjoyed our 4th floor balcony overlooking the street. It was a very pleasant place to sit in the evening as we sipped on some wine. The hotel restaurant was exceptionally good. We had a great meal there. Our room rate was not unreasonable at E74.50 with taxes (US$95). Sue on Our Balcony by Bwana_Brown After arriving in Praia de Mira during the afternoon, we took a slow drive around the almost deserted streets looking for possible places to spend the night. We had pre-booked various accommodations throughout Portugal before leaving on our trip and had been using them without problems up to this point. However, after spending the past few nights in larger towns like Evora, Castelo Branco, Guarda and finally Lamego, we decided to change our plans. Instead of going to Porto and Leiria as planned, we decided to cancel those reservations and head for some small out of the way places on the western Atlantic coastline as we made our way back to Lisbon. Most of the residencials that we saw here looked quite seedy but, suddenly the very bright and cheery-looking Macarico hove into view!
This place has nice rooms, with balconies overlooking the sandy beach along the Atlantic shoreline. There was plenty of available space in this 18 room accommodations and we were in for the night at E40 (US$53). We did have a couple of small problems here. For one, the spare pillows in Portugal are kept in a separate closet and the one that we had to use reeked of mothballs. Also, the next morning there was zero hot water available for a shower - just a trickle coming from the tap. This was the only place during our entire trip that did not live up to expectations, but we at least had a bed for the night! The 'Vasco da Gama' by Bwana_Brown On returning to Peniche from our great boating excursion to the Berlenga Islands at about 5:30 PM, we took a walk along the main waterfront street to see if we could find ourselves somewhere to spend the night. There was not much there except for restaurants, so we went one block back from the harbour to try the next parallel street. We struck gold here with lots of Residencials and we picked the Vasco da Gama because we liked its appearance. We were quickly taken up to view our room, for the going rate of E25 (US$31).
After our shower experience in Praia de Mira the night before, we were pleased to find this place had good water pressure. The best part of the room was that it had a window that opened up onto the little square where our car was parked. It is nice to be able to sit with the window wide open in Portugal (no bugs) and just observe the activity on the streets below. You can feel the wind and hear the sounds while sipping on a 'vinho tinto' after another long day! When we left the next morning, I gave the guy E30 cash because I enjoyed it so much! The photo shows Sue in our top left window and, in the annex slightly lower and to the right, is the breakfast area. Vila Real, Quinta do Paço by micas_pt Another excellent choice to sleep in Portugal are the “Estalagens de Portugal”. www.estalagensdeportugal.comr /> Most of them are manor houses which later where adapted for Inns. Although each one of them is privately owned they joined a “network” and I assume that grants them some quality and trust patterns. Not as impersonal as a hotel, but also not as cozy as a privately owned house, these inns have good quality standards concerning rooms and food. Prices are moderate – meaning around 70euros (May2004) for a double room, depending on history of the manor house and also location. Photo shows one of those inns situated near Vila Real (north), called Quinta do Paço. Theme: Inn

Sue on Our Balcony by Bwana_Brown When I was planning our Portugal trip, I decided that after our first 3 nights in Lisbon, we should head south to the Algarve where we would spend another two nights. This would give us some time to look around in the area and also allow northern Portugal a few more days to warm up in case our Spring visit was a bit too early! I specifically chose Aljezur because I did not want to be in a big tourist high-rise accommodation situation. I also wanted to be able to take a look at the Algarve's much less developed western coast and the mountainous area around Monchique.
The 'O Palazim' was recommended in my DK Eyewitness Travel Guide as a good spot in Aljezur, and there really are not a lot of other choices! It was a simple job to pick up the telephone and call them from Canada - no muss or fuss and not even any money put down. We paid E35 per day (US$45) including breakfast. The rooms were very nice and we were impressed by the sliding window shutter arrangement that works like an outside blind to keep the sun out. They also had a covered bar/restaurant area attached to the small room used for breakfast. Hotel Ibis Saldanha by Bwana_Brown Since this was our first time in Portugal and we were not sure how easy it would be to find a Residencial or Pensao in its downtown area, we played it safe and booked ourselves into a hotel located just outside the main Baixa tourist area. The Hotel Ibis in Saldanha served our needs well with clean and not overly expensive rooms. Just down the street was a small supermarket where we could buy whatever supplies we needed for our 3-days in Lisbon. The hotel is within walking distance of the tourist area but you have to keep your wits about you to find your way back in the darkness through the twisting streets!
Each small room has a private bathroom and twin beds. Breakfast for two costs E9 and consists of the usual fruit, yoghurt, cereal, toast, slices of ham and/or cheese with juice and the black Portugese coffee. They have a bar area in the hotel and also the restaurant serves evening meals. After a couple of tiring days, we tried their restaurant with mixed success - the quiche was good but their hake medallions with coriander was very bland! The staff were always helpful. Rooms were E59 (US$72) per night without breakfast.
