Pousadas are luxury hotels located in restored monasteries, castles, convents, forts and manor houses. There is also another kind of pousada; the regional one. These are located in areas with historical connections or merely in beautiful sites with special appeal. They were formerly run by the state and now run by the Pestana group.
They have all the facilities you are looking for. Theme: HotelComparison: most expensiveDirections: They are situated all over the country.Website: www.pousadas.pt

This place can only be reached by car (or taxi from Regua). It has nice views over the valley. Its an old house with furniture out of that period. You must make sure that you have a room with river view. (More expensive). The others are smaller and have absolute no view. The garden is nice, the area is calm, a pool is available. The restaurant is expensive but good. In Regua (10 min by car) you have more options at reasonable rates.

The hotel is part of The Pestana group of hotels and resorts, one of 5 in Alvor. beautifully furnished rooms with all the amenity's you would wish for, (there are 55 apartment type rooms). the staff are friendly and helpful. The first year we stayed there the restaurant was open in the evenings and the food if not a little pricey was first class, but in 2007 they had decided that it was not worth opening in October because it was not that busy and so it just opened in the afternoon for lunch which was a great disappointment and also proves inconvinent for people who do not wish to walk into or around Alvor when it may well be cold and raining. Another great let down is the hotel bar, now we don't want long nights of loud disco music and alcohol fuelled conversation but a few drinks with a bit of music would be nice, instead all you get is a TV with football on or silence. absolutely no atmosphere at all, something that they really do need to do something about. Just some music would help. In Oct 2008 i have arrived to find that they are now charging for use of the wireless internet and at €8 per hour it can work out very expensive for people who have work to do or just like to keep in touch with friends. The Aparthotel offers a swimming pool, Health club, sauna, spa, laundry, Restaurant/snack bar all in all it is a nice hotel but it really does need a few points addressing View from our Balconey Theme: HotelAddress: Quinta Do Ribeiro, ALVOR, Portugal, 8501-904, PTPhone: 351282000500Website: http://wwwpestana.com

Estalagem do Convento by nursesweet This great hotel is just outside the city walls of Obidos, and is a converted convent. The rooms are clean and nicely decorated. The staff are very friendly and helpful and breakfast is included in the rate. It is one of the more reasonably priced places to stay in the town. (at least in the off-season)0

the glorious sunrise that filled my pousada room! by angiebabe, 2 more photos For someone who is supposed to be travelling as a budget traveller it was a real splash or budget blow out! Excellent bathroom and great bath to soak in with the excellent red (wine!) i was travelling with and what great timing to use the rose scented candles i had with me! Along with fluffy towels, dressing gown, chocolates waiting on the pillow and bathroom heating all in a historic location with character and great views. I had arrived late about 10pm after visiting Fatima - too late for its two days pilgrimage as I was having too much stunning scenery on my travels further north - but getting a bit worried about where to stay - this place was alit on its hill visible from quite a way off so as per my Rough Guide encouraging write up I went to check it out - the first price I had said I didnt think it would have cost so much so he gave me a discount and even though at 118 euros that sounds pricey it was a lovely night and a good price for a splash out!
From the service approach of the staff to the view to the historic building and the spectacular sunrise i had which when i opened my window looking over the city it was as if the whole sunrise filled my room - it was such a nice temperature still i could leave my window wide open, climb back into bed and let the new morning fill my room! After an excellent buffet breakfast an invigorating 5 minute walk further up the hill to the castle with mirador over miles around. Vale do Lobo is a lovely resort to stay in very close to Quinta do Lago and Dunes Durados. It is built beside the beach and on site there are 2 golf courses, tennis courts, numerous restaurants, 2 spa centres with pools, 2 fitness areas. It is perfect for families or couples trvelling on their own. Specific accommodation - 854b I booked this directly with the owner and was advertised as being 2 bedroomed. In reality it is a 1 bedroom apartment which has recently been remodelled. The kitchen has been made smaller and a tiny room with twin beds put in. There is no window or ventilation in this room only glass bricks in part of the wall. We got away with it as we had our 15 year old son with us but it would have been a nightmare with another couple. Storage or lack of it was a problem. First thing we had to do was put some of the owners rubbish away to attempt to make space for ourselves. Other apartments, there are 4 in a block with a and b downstairs are fine. C and D are proper 2 bedroomed and are terrific.
Cant really say anything positive about our accommodation but others were very nice with reasonable views. Were I to go again I would get villa with pool. Vale do Lobo is very expensite however I was fortunate enough to be given 2 vouchers for the spa which was a real treat.

One of the views from the hotel by carnsoreboxer In Villamoura, on the beach, ample sized twin rooms though would recommend going for sea view as they are bigger. Has outdoor pool, good bars and best of all free return transfers to all the golf courses
Breakfast here is incredidble and will keep you going for the day. Theme: HotelPrice: US$80-120 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: VillamouraDirections: Within walking distance of Villamoura Marina

Booked through Easyjet along with my flight and car I was very fortunate to end up in this very reasonable b&b hotel. Even in high season this hotel is far enough out of the centre of Olhos d'Agua that you would not be overrun with tourists. Within a short walk of the hotel there are several decent eateries. I cannot remember the name of my favourite, so you will have to try them all. The hotel has well appointed en-suite rooms, an indoor games area and an outdoor pool. Being March, and very quiet in the hotel, the outdoor pool was not open. If like me you are driving then there is adequate parking in the hotel grounds. There are 4 great places to search for hostels in Portugal: www.hostelworld.com (doesn't have the state hostels but offers online booking service for the others), www.hostelz (has a pretty good compilation of hostels), www.pousadasjuventude.pt (with all the state hostels and online booking service) or www.hihostels.com. I normally try not to book through hostelworld because they charge a tax and if I quit they won't give it back. So I normally try to contact the hostel directly and book there (however it isn't always possible). Most hostels in Portugal are quite good so it is always a good option especially if you want to meet new people. However in websites such as www.booking.com you might find good and cheap hotels, even cheaper than the hostels.
Hostels are great places to meet new people, to party and find relaxed, laid back environment. Theme: HostelPrice: less than US$20 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than average
